No. This isn't a matter of personal preference; it's a matter of right and wrong. "Programme" is not a word; when you misspell the word like that, it's just as wrong as it would be if I were to spell it "programa".

Clearly it would be okay for me to spell it "programa", then.

Well it appears a choice has been made for me, led of course by the expected actor Money. One must only hope that dark horse NYU isn't the choice.

Given that this is an American site and we are Americans, it is necessary for us to conform to American usage. Anything else is incorrect.

Try that logic in the "Which football club..." thread.  I've wanted to go in there and make a joke about it (like how you'll always have a Euro or three dropping into a thread about American football to tell us what "football" really means...as if we haven't heard the same thing 1000 times before...yes we get it, words mean different things in different places, let it go!), but that would be thread sh**tting and I try not to do that.

I just hate the implication here that British usage is somehow superior to and more correct than American usage. It's not. It's wrong here.

Doesn't that happen only in the ones with gardenpath titles? I wouldn't know for sure, I don't usually open threads clearly marked to be about AF.

Does it really matter?  It would still be a dick thing to do.  We know you people call soccer "football".  Even if the title is a little ambiguous you can still figure out which sport it's about from reading the OP, we don't need to hear (again) that we differ in the use of the word.

Same thing goes for the word "liberal".  Yes, we Americans are probably wrong about the use of both words, but it's the words we use.  We know what they mean, YOU know what we mean when we use them, you're not going to "fix" us by reminding us about it.

I agree, but I think Americans can do the same for our British posters, and understand what they mean. We don't need to condescend each other for using the language we were respectively taught.

Words' meanings are the way they are because they got that way, and political terms frequently mean different things in different countries (tho' the differences are typically more subtle than that example). Trying to 'fix' them is absurd, but remembering - and reminding of-  the fact, and preferrably of how it came about is not; it's actually a necessary prerequisite for meaningful discussion (but not every single time it comes up, duh.)

Not that that's particularly relevant to the non-issue of spelling (people can spell colour any way they want, everyone'll still understand it) or even the issue of football threads. That issue is much simpler: there's actually more discussion of football than AF here. Or I think so, at least; it may be observation bias (and I'm not counting asinine discussions of asinine political endorsements by asinine celebs I don't know and who at a closer look turn out to be athletes. That's just election season silliness, not sports discussion.) It's vaguely dickish to hog threadviews with a misleading title; I guess it's just as vaguely dickish to postpad about your disappointment.

I'll often say that I'm not terribly fond of America in general, but I certainly won't stand for the idea that our culture is somehow inferior to that of other countries and I'll always come to the defense of our language when it's attacked. Maybe that's what patriotism means.
