Many of the oligarchs, especially the original Yetsin era ones, are Jewish. So even if it has a racist slant, it is not wrong per se.

Banana Republic? The ethnicity break down is really a pointless excercise and you could say that it's hard to determine if the author is actually racist((s)he definitely gives that vibe, but I didn't see any outright racist statements in there after I skimmed the article), but I just wanted to point out how illegitimate the wealth of the oligarchs is in Russia, which is pretty important when discussing Russia. You would probably get similar results in US, but with slightly more people getting rich fairly and a few of the billionaires inheriting their parents fortunes.

I am really dissapointed at the fact that somewhat youngs(families with young kids) started going to church more often now, but I guess that's to be expected. When I was growing up there was a pretty deep divide between really olds and everyone else, because the olds would hang out on lavochkas and quarrel while consuming sunflower seeds and obviously vote communist. I'd be interested to know about the more nuanced generational differences in Russia that I couldn't observe as a kid.

I am not ag, but i live in Russia and "old" enough (55). So - my "2 cents".. Few old people still hang out on lavochkas and so on, but many of them still vote communist. Most of the other - vote for Putin and his "United Russia", being grateful to authorities even for the crumbs they have. Youth doesn't spend time on "lavochkas" too, and usually don't vote at all...

In non-democracies this is a very hard question to answer. He may stay there for 30 years, or he may be asking for an asylum in the German embassy tomorrow. Nobody knows, really.
