This sh**t makes me sick... economic woes, uncertainty in the world- Congress not doing its job, and the world is focused on DC high society wearing tuxedos and guffawing with each other...
Any one see this the same way?

Remember last time while this was going on, Osama was being killed. So yeah, sh**t like this goes on all the time in Washington but it doesn't really impact the running of government. And I wouldn't say the world is focused on it....are the cable news channels obsessing about it or something? I wouldn't know because I don't watch it. Maybe you should take this as a cue to not watch that drivel anymore.

Meh, I don't see any harm in D.C.-types seeing each other in a more humanizing setting every now and then. They might tone down the rhetoric a bit if they knew their opponents as anything other than a caricature.
No reason why Lohan and Kardashian and those types should be invited though (naturally it was Fox News that invited both of them).

I don't. The press writes a bit about it for a couple of days and then its back to being serious. A much worse problem is the press constantly focusing on pseudo-problems like "Dog-gate" or "Rosen-gate".
Infact, I think Obama's speech here was the best I've seen from any president at these dinners in the past.

I'd love to see Mitt Romney try one of them speeches. The sound of the crickets chirping would be funny enough.

Call me a buzzkill- but I find joking about the nation's very serious problems to be in bad taste...when Kimmel mentioned that if any one needed guns to ask Eric Holder- a man died because of that program! I was upset when Bush- a few years ago- had a picture put up of some one looking under his desk in the Oval Office and said "those WMDs have to be somewhere"....thousands of men and women died because we believed Saddam had WMDs...it is not a laughing matter

Some of the jokes kind of rubbed me the wrong way but comedy in general can be pretty hit-and-miss. I am easily amused though, enjoyed watching, and plan to watch next year.

The dinner was good back when it really was designed to "acknowledge award-winners, present scholarships, and give the press and the president an evening of friendly appreciation"; back when it was really about politics and media. But now, with Kardashians, the dinner's kinda just turning into another Hollywood festival.

The unique misfortune of the Palestinian refugees is that they are a weapon in what seems to be a permanent war...today, in the Middle East, you get a repeated sinking sensation about the Palestinian refugees: they are only a beginning, not an end. Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad. The ultimate aim is not such humane small potatoes as repatriating refugees.

Obama made (by my count) three self-deprecating dog jokes during his speech, so that isn't quite the zinger you thought it would be.

Just watching this now; personally, I love these things. Obama is a good comedian and I like that he isn't afraid to make controversial jokes, especially at the expense of himself and his administration. Certainly a refreshing shift in attitude compared to most presidents.
"Is the teleprompter working? ... Are you kidding? What do you expect me to do out there? I literally have
no idea
what I'm saying tonight."
"Now, Hillary won't stop drunk-texting me from Cartagena!"
"Look at this party... I was just relieved to learn this wasn't a GSA conference. Unbelievable! Not even the mind reader knew what they were thinking."
"What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? A pit bull is
delicious
."
"My step father always told me it's a boy-eat-dog world out there."
"...in fact I had a lot more material prepared, but I have to get the Secret Service home in time for their new curfew."
Edit- Jimmy Kimmel's stuff is hilarious as well.

Obama should have made a joke like "I will support gay marriage in my second term, but first you have to vote for me again" during this dinner as a tool to signal that his views have stopped "evolving". I think this would have been a good signal to actually don't say he supports gay marriage while actually supporting it later and to not piss off the moderate voters before the election.

That joke would have been neither good humor nor good politics.
