If he's active in the union, as you imply, lean Obama. Remember that Obama is also pro-death penalty and supports securing the borders (more immigrants deported and more boots on the border than ever).

Also, he works as a union member? That's not a job.

You seem to know Jack Dawson pretty well.  Given your intimacy with him, I don't think you need to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet how he'll vote.  Why not just go ask him directly?

I just created this fictional blue collar worker to ask how people like him, AKA Reagan Democrats, will vote in this election.

People like this don't really exist on the not-internet.

Yes, they all lost their jobs and houses long ago, and many have died off due to the ailments and mishaps which do beset the poor.  The few that do survive now live under the freeway-overpass, and voting is the furthest thing from their minds.

He'd have voted for Santorum. But I think he's pretty convinced he'll vote for Obama again (as he did in 2008).

Reluctant vote for Obama

If he loses his job between now and the election, he'll stay home and won't vote

I feel like this all reads out as the stereotype profile of the Reagan Democrat. This is what I'm aiming for in this thread and basically most blue collar workers are in line with Dawson political positions.

Depends how susceptible he is to BS... he probably voted for Clinton and Gore, didn't for Kerry or Obama 08... my gut is he probably votes Romney... although if he knew what Romney wants to do... he'd vote Obama, but I think the Romney economic BS and the social issue rhetoric will pull him right.

But I disagree that all blue-collar workers think the same as this... plus he seems more... KY, WV, TN than PA.

Plus - breaking down this guy a bit...

According to the 2008 exit poll...

Lost white men by 16%
Lost white people in his income bracket by 14%
He probably doesn't have any college, so white guys without college Obama lost by 18%
weekly Church attendance by 12%....

So this guy, regardless of his concerns about medicare etc etc, in the end he won't care enough about them to vote Obama.

Not entirely... it makes you MORE likely to vote Democratic but look at the PA Senate race in 2010... Toomey got 44% of the Union vote. Obama did well, but McCain still won 32% of Union people in PA... and I'll bet they're social Conservatives from W PA. Bush got 38% of the Union vote in 2004...

Go forth, real people, and speculate as to the voting habits of these imaginary people:

Jenna - age 21.  Part-time waitress, earns and receives about $13,000/year and pays nothing in tax.  White, comes from a working-class family.  High-school education and is taking classes in Criminal Justice at a local community college.  Receives food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Volunteers for her church youth group, has pledged abstinence until marriage.

Sam - age 19.  Private in the US Army, earning about $20,000/year before taxes.  White, comes from a working-class family.  High-school education, joined the army in the hopes of being able to attend college.  Only sometimes goes to church, but when he got his girlfriend pregnant he proposed to her and asked her to keep the baby (she refused and didn't).

Larry - age 66.  Retired autoworker, receiving about $55,000/year before taxes from Social Security and his pension.  White, comes from a middle-class, blue-collar family.  High-school education.  Stopped paying his union dues several years ago, and owns three guns.  Divorced, has 3 children, all of whom are grown, and 2 grandchildren.  Only sometimes goes to church.

Wesley - age 39.  Associate at a law firm, earning about $90,000/year before taxes.  Parents were upper-middle to upper class.  Went to private school, and attended state university for both his undergraduate studies and law school.  Unmarried and without children.  Irreligious.

Arturo - age 44.  Owns a landscaping business, earning about $125,000/year before taxes.  Immigrated from Honduras at age 6, parents were wealthy for Honduras but middle-class in America.  High-school education.  Many of his employees are illegal immigrants, his clients are wealthy McMansion owners.  Married and has 2 children, wants to send both to college.  Very religious and attends church weekly.

David - age 52.  Neurosurgeon, earning about $750,000/year before taxes.  Comes from an upper-middle class family.  Graduated from Columbia and the NYU School of Medicine.  Married, has 2 children in college and a third in private school.  Jewish, attends a Reform synagogue most weeks.

Not a single one of these people votes Republican, because the GOP has done something to alienate each and every last one of them.

Schaitberger has been ramping up the "we are victims of the right" crap though. So it could come down to how involved he really is with the IAFF.

I doubt many such people exist in LA, but such a person would definitely be a Romney voter.
