Since now he has most of his first term under his belt, I think we have more to judge him by.

I'm still going to say Clinton.

I preferred calling him "Chimpy," but that might have unfortunate connotations in this case.

Bush: Better than him.
Clinton: Better than him, though that has more to do with my disdain for Clinton.
Bush I: Better than him.
Reagan: Better than him.
Carter: Slightly better than him.
Ford: Better than him.
Nixon: About equal.
Johnson: Johnson was the best president of the second half of the 20th century.

So one of those two.

Bush: Far better, obviously.
Clinton: Far better. Not a Clinton fan.
Bush I: Somewhat better.
Reagan: Better, from my political perspective.
Carter: Far better.
Ford: Better, sure.
Nixon: Nixon was an unbelievably awful President. Far, far, better, as is almost everyone else on the list.
Johnson: Not an LBJ admirer by any means, but he had a lot of commendable, important achievements along with all the horrible, horrible mistakes.

So I'll go with Johnson. Mind you, considering the competition that's kind of damning with faint praise. WinkTongue

The Obama-Clinton comparison is fun, especially because the black guy "acts white" and the white guy "acts black." Tongue

Ok, that might have been mildly offensive. Tongue

Snowstalker subscribes to regrettable revisionism that holds that Nixon was the last "liberal" President, I believe. Sad

Ideologically, Carter, but in terms of what they got done probably Nixon. Hate him for escalating Vietnam, but some of his domestic reforms were good and he did help foster quite a bit of cooperation between parties (granted, not in the most moral of ways).

Carter is possibly the best person ever to be president, though you need a certain level of amorality to be in Washington, or you'll be chewed up and spit out like he was.

Snowstalker (and other leftists of the UnionsFirst! bloc of posters) are terribly wrong because Nixon was our first modern far right President. Compare his approach and "body of work" (read: damage done) to Reagan's or Dubya's.

I don't think Nixon was a liberal at all; he was only liberal in comparison to the Goldwaterite wing of the party. However, Nixon was willing to make important domestic reforms, making liberal actions with conservative rhetoric.

Why do so many posters think that Obama is better than Carter(Republicans need not apply because you shouldn't be reading that far down the list, you are probably in the wrong party then, I'll go ahead and apologize for being exclusive).

None

(I was going to vote for the first option, but "best president since W" doesn't make sense since he's the only one.)

Clearly the solution is to privatize presidential elections.

So, in less than four years, get excited for the 2016 MetLife Financial U Pick The Prez Extravaganza. If you tweet a picture of your completed ballot with the hashtag #ivoted, you could win a trip for two to the inauguration or an iTunes gift card.

Minus Watergate, President Obama has been the best president since Richard Nixon as far as his accomplishments go.

NDAA alone makes Obama far more of a tyrant than Bush ever was. Add to that the corporatist sell out that healthcare reform begins, and you understand why it's easy to criticize him from the left, imo.

It was a hard call for me. In terms of their ideas I like Carter quite a bit on a lot of issues but he seemed to get a lot less done during his term in office than Johnson and it bothered me that he was pro-life, tinkered with price controls during the energy crisis, and boycotted the 1980 Olympic Games in Moskva. My strongest temptation to select Carter rather than LBJ was over the handling of Vietnam but I still haven't entirely made up my mind on this particular topic. Given a bit of persuasion I could probably be convinced to go with good 'ole Jimmy.
