Well, it's over.
Congratulations, bigots. Maybe next you can bring back Jim Crow.

November might tell a different story in Washington, Maine and Maryland. Or maybe not.

Was there ever any real doubt as to the outcome -especially in North Carolina? This is still the South after all.

No, sadly. NC still has a long way to go.

Washington and Maine -probably.
Maryland is more iffy, due to the high proportion of evangelical black voters who are otherwise stalwart Democrats.

I'm disappointed in my state. However, it is only a matter of time before North Carolinians realize how foolish and hurtful this anti-gay (and anti-plenty-of-straight-families) campaign is.
Only 7 (out of 88 reporting) counties have opposed this:
Orange (Chapel Hill)
Wake (Raleigh)
New Hanover (Wilmington)
Mecklenburg (Charlotte)
Buncombe (Asheville)
Watauga (Boone)
Guilford (Greensboro)
Probably Durham and Chatham will join them.

Sad.
I found something interesting though: my precinct in southern Charlotte was 57% McCain in 2008 but voted against Amendment 1.

Yup. And we'll take our country to a time when it was great- lynchings, church burnings, beatings- hell, maybe we'll even reinstate slavery!
Because, of course, what's not straight, rich, and white- just ain't right.
PROGRESS.

Can't wait to see what these bigots will have to say when it's legalized nationally in their lifetime. They won't know what hit 'em.

There isn't exactly a rational way you can deal with these types of people.
The joke's (partially) on them, too, since this amendment affects straight relationships as well.

I knew this would pass, but there was always that glimmer of hope in me that eventually people would come around and vote against it. I'm disappointed as a gay man, not for myself, but for all of the gay teens in North Carolina (and across the country) who are continually told that "it gets better", and who hope and pray every night for that day to come. Tonight's results, although expected, just reinforce to all of these kids that they their lives and their love is worth less than that of their straight brothers and sister in the eyes of the government of a country that claims "liberty and justice for all". I look forward with trepidation to the referendums in November, and that perhaps these can fulfill that promise of "it gets better".

The bigots of today aren't that different from the bigots of yesterday. Both support restricting rights to people on account of physical traits. I see no reason why homophobia shouldn't be compared to racism.
Not that it matters, since there are studies which suggest that most of you guys are closet homos, anyway.
