This is an interesting article by former Clinton advisor James Carvillie on why Obama and the Democrats are in trouble. It's an interesting read on the psychological state of the Democratic Party at the moment, partisan rhetoric aside. Esp into the mental state of the hacks who compose the majority of membership of this forum who have absolute blind faith that Obama is a shoo-in in Nov.

Carville doesn't really have a great track record.

I think a lot of casual observers are taking Obama's victory in the fall for granted. Clearly, his campaign is not, and are preparing for a long and very expensive campaign where turnout is crucial.

James Carville is too ugly to be taken seriously.

I don't understand why he thinks Democrats are being complacent, because that's clearly not what is happening. The campaign is pulling out all the stops very early.

Carville has always appeared to be a stealth critic of Obama, trying to discredit him in the name of the Democratic party. I think he's still very loyal to the Clintons and still has a sour taste in his mouth from 2008.

Or maybe he really is just trying to get Democrats motivated.

ps- he made a good point about incumbents being voted out in Europe. I don't know if that will translate here, since we're doing better than Europe economically, but it's something to think about.

Carville is a baboon! He's wrong! It ain't true! They're connecting to voters! We will win! We will!

This is exactly what he's talking about. Keep it up.

just because carville is a democrat doesn't mean he likes obama. He seems to hate obama every since obama beat clinton in 08 so this doen't surprise me and also james carville is married to a republican. just sayin

This. In 08 the Obama campaign office was not open til August in my town. This year we opened in March and they already had 3 offices before that.

I think the election will be a close one, assuming something dramatic doesn't happen in Europe or regarding national security or Israel goes on an adventure in Iran. The economy does seem to be slowing down a bit so Obama probably won't gain much from where he is now, which is maybe a slight lead over Romney. He needs some solid jobs reports. On the flip side it will be really hard for Romney to win with more than a few points due to his terrible performance with Hispanics. Some of the polls coming out are quite stunning. I really wonder how he is doing with Adians.

He's completely right--it's the same trap that killed Dewey in 1948 (Nothing could possibly change by next month! Why campaign?)

However,  Obama is clearly campaigning.

He's been running around a little bit, but the $25 million ad buy marks the start of full campaign mode.

I think what James is worried about is Romney and Obama are deadlocked in terms of the popular vote right now.

He's right in some points, especially the degree of complacency among democrats/liberals "Romney is awful, doesn't really stand for anything, he can't possibly win"... which is certainly there.

Obama is doing well in the states he needs to hold on to to win in November, the national number is close because his enormous margins in 2008 have closed up and the states that voted against him by a lot... will vote against him by on average bigger margins this time.

His message isn't for the campaign, because they wouldn't be spending this much money and sending Obama out as much... but it's for supporters and independents to not sit back.

Carville is right, they need to step it up a bit.  Though as he admits at the end, Romney's campaign is pretty terrible.

If Carville wrote this article about Romney, Kevin would be decrying him as a lefty Clinton loon.

Of course Obama could lose.  There's no denying that.  An economic collapse could occur, a corruption scandal could break, etc.

The absurd part is saying that Romney could win, which the more halfwit members of the Republican Party around here keep trying to push on me.  There's nothing about the man that suggests he could defeat a candidate even half the quality of Obama on his own merit.  The only way Mitt would become President is, again, a huge catastrophe.

I support candidates in hopes of preventing catastrophe, not encouraging it.  The situation that surrounds a Romney win is something no American who values their own well-being should be hoping for, which is why I'm on the Obama side in 2012.
