the one aspect of this story that struck me the most is that his wife will be staying with him.  which is cool, but leaves questions of logistics.

Well, perhaps she does 'love' him in a certain way, but acceptance of something like this could also be a sign that the 'marriage' is more traditional - an arrangement of convenience, business,and reproduction - than a romantic relationship.
