I tried to get into it but the hilariously broken economic engine and all the other little unrealistic quirks (like apparently you can have a population in the multi-billions with full UHC) were a bit too much for me.

Well the thing about any paradox game is that they basically don't fix some of the ridiculous issues in them until they've been out for a year. You're right about the economic system, if you stick with Laizze-Faire before you've used the government to build up industry then you will never get anything but vastly unprofitable explosives and fertilizer factories. But even with the warts its by far the best of its genre.

The game operates in a universe where ISI works and government led industrialization is really important because of exactly that. Actually, they've just patched it to boost Laizze-Faire but it still only works if you use the government to build up actually decent industries first or are a powerhouse like the US.

Is it too much to ask that the capitalists respond to price signals and supply and demand?  I can't imagine that would be *too* hard, at least conceptually, to implement, considering that there are only a few dozen commodities to trade.

There are clearly a lot of people here who've never had to worry about service provision or money in general.
