WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama raised a combined $43.6 million in April for his campaign and the Democratic Party as he faces a unifying Republican effort around Mitt Romney for the White House.

Obama's April fundraising haul fell short of the $53 million he raised in March. That's as his campaign said more than 400,000 people contributed to the campaign last month, including 169,000 new donors.

"This election is going to be close, given the historic challenges this country faced when the president came into office," campaign manager Jim Messina told supporters in a YouTube video released Wednesday.

Obama's fundraising announcement came the same day the Republican group Crossroads GPS said it would spend $25 million on ads critical of the president. Crossroads is the non-profit arm of American Crossroads, a "super" political committee backed by former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove that has raised about $100 million this election to defeat Obama.

Indeed, Messina's message pointed to the millions of dollars being spent on anti-Obama ads by so-called special interests and oil company executives — specifically calling out the Koch brothers, who founded Americans For Prosperity. That group has spent about $5 million on ads so far critical of Obama.

While Romney and the Republicans have super PACs working in their favor, so does Obama. Priorities USA Action on Tuesday released a video critical of Bain Capital, the firm Romney once headed. But Democratic super PACs have raised and spent less on average than their GOP counterparts, including Restore Our Future, which supports Romney.

Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party had about $124 million cash on hand at the end of March, while Romney and the GOP reported $43 million left in the bank at the end of March, federal reports show. Obama's recent figures don't count donations this month, when the president raised about $15 million at a Hollywood fundraising event hosted by actor George Clooney.

Presidential campaigns and super PACs have until midnight Sunday to file their fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee raised $40.1 million last month and finished April with $61.4 million on hand, a GOP source confirms to POLITICO.

That's the first joint Romney-RNC fundraising figure of the 2012 campaign, and comes close to matching the $43.6 million President Obama and the Democratic National Committee took in last month.

Obama+Dems still have about 130-140 Mio. $ cash on hand and May should be a better month (Obama collected already 25 Mio. $ in the last week alone).

OFA ended April with $115 mill in the Bank.

No word yet on how much COH the DNC or the Obama joint fundraising committees have.

I think it's safe to say both sides will have all the money they need to run the campaigns the want.

Romney for President took in only $11.7 mill in April and spent $12.6 mil leaving them with $9.2 mill COH.

This has to be a disappointing number for Romney. Sure large donors to the RNC and Super Pacs will  help his cause but since he cant coordinate with them it is a far less efficient way to run a campaign.

The gay marriage support will have shored up some donations for the President.

OFA+DNC+OVF+SSVF+PUSAA combined have about 150 million $ left cash on hand.

Interesting. In my release above it said that Romney+RNC raised a total of 40 million last month and they had about 60 million left.

But Romney only raised 12 million and had 9 million left and the RNC raised just 11 million.

The RNC had 35 million left, but also 10 million debt.

So, if they raised 12 and 11 million, where are the other 17 million ?

In the Romney Victory Fund 2012 - which I can't find on the FEC ... Tongue

After some research I found it, but they are filing their stuff quarterly - so we have to wait until July when the Q2 report comes in.

So, here are all the cash on hand numbers for April:

Obama camp

115.2 million - Obama for America
  24.3 million - DNC
4.9 million - Obama Victory Fund (together with the DNC)
4.8 million - Priorities USA Action (Obama Super PAC)
2.8 million - Swing State Victory Fund (together with the DNC)

Combined: 152 million $

Romney camp

  34.8 million - RNC
25.5 million - Crossroads GPS (Karl Rove)
17.4 million - Romney Victory Fund (together with the RNC)
9.2 million - Romney For President
8.2 million - Restore Our Future (Romney Super PAC)

Combined: 95 million $

...

The DNC has only 4 million in debt though, while the RNC still has 10 million in debt.

Which means the Democrats have a spending power of 148 million, while the Republicans have 85 million.

The gay marriage support will have shored up some donations for the President.

Yepp. Obama collected 25 million $ alone in the week after he supported Marriage Equality.

So the May numbers for Obama should be quite strong (50-60 million).

Doesn't really belong here, but here are the numbers:

DSCC: 4.5 million raised, 25.7 million cash on hand, no debt

NRSC: 4.3 million raised, 21.6 million cash on hand, no debt

DCCC: 6.5 million raised, 25.0 million cash on hand, no debt

NRCC: 6.9 million raised, 31.3 million cash on hand, no debt
