The backbencher who preceded Bill Posey, if you need a reminder.

Former Florida Congressman Dave Weldon announced Friday that he will join a crowded field of Republicans seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

“We are at a time in our nation’s history where we the people have to make tough choices that will determine our national direction for the next 4 years ... choices that determine America’s direction for decades,” Weldon, who represented the Space Coast from 1994-2008, said in a written statement.

Long shot - he may perform decent, but Mack is going to win this thing anyway.

Same district that Bill Nelson represented if I am not mistaken. Minus a few boundary changes of course in 1992.

Mack probably still wins the primary, but who knows.

After doing a bit of checking, the only place I found this story where I live was a sentence in small print on page 4 of the metro section of my newspaper. It wasn't reported on any local news channels and no one I know who cares about politics has heard about it. I'm inclined to say this guy is an instant fail, at least in Jacksonville.

Are there any other Florida posters who have ever heard of this guy? I haven't, he hasn't...

Dave Weldon served on the Appropriations Committee:

He left after 14 years in office to return to his medical practise. If that makes Dave Weldon a "backbencher," then it only means what this country needs is more "backbenchers" like Dave Weldon.

I actually do remember this guy, because he was one of those Reps with an odd and curious gay fixation. The main legislation he pushed for was to ban gay adoptions in the District of Columbia.
