It can't be someone you knew personally. Assume they are brought back "in their prime" and guaranteed at least 20 years of functional life(ie. free of mental and physical disability)

Tough one....obviously we need a great person who died too young.  Do we go artist or science?  Cobain?Hendrix?Lennon?H.S.Thompson?  Or maybe Sagan?Curie?  Or maybe a genius who didn't really die young, but another 20+ years of genius, especially if he/she gets to expand off of what we know today, could come up with wonderful stuff...maybe Einstein?Edison?Leonardo da Vinci?Newton?

I think Leonardo gets my vote.

When I saw Steve Irwin mentioned my knee-jerk response was to enthusiastically agree, but in the end I reckon it would be more enriching for society and several fields of academic study if it were to be Karl Marx instead, who would have the potential to contribute an awful lot in twenty years given the amount of new material he could study.

Gandhi or MLK.

We need someone who's calling people on their bullsh**t.

Leonardo da Vinci. Interesting to see what he would come up with, given the tehnological level of today.

Leonardo is a good answer. My religious beliefs about Jesus' status as 'dead or alive' preclude me from listing Him (and I'd be honestly a little afraid of trifling with Him), but Shakyamuni Buddha would be amazingly interesting, as would Kobo Daishi and Ryokan Taigu. Therese of Lisieux, Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen. But if I could only choose one I think it would have to be the early-to-mid-twentieth-century popular Japanese novel and magazine writer Yoshiya Nobuko, for the purely selfish reason that I'm trying to do academic work on her and struggling a bit on how to start.

Bill Hicks. Then again, considering how much worse things are than they were in the early 90s, I'm not sure he'd cope Tongue

Donna Summer.  I've heard she was in the studio recording as recently as two week prior to her death.

Bring someone back? I hate the man's politics, but I would bring back Jack Layton.

Prevent someone from dying for 20 more years? Abraham Lincoln.
