I want to see just how much public transportation reduces the mileage one drives.

I tend to drive somewhere between 12,000-13,000 miles a year, and i don't use any public transportation.  For purposes of this poll, I voted option 4.

Need more poll options if you want to know how public transportation affects miles driven.

Definitely less than 5000 miles per year if you're only counting in an automobile.  It could over-top 5000 if you include motorbikes, which I use most of the time for ordinary local trips.  I use public transport extensively for journeys over one hour away, or when in Bangkok.

I don't have a car, and only periodically use public transit, for long-distance travel.

A lot. A car is a necessity in Memphis.

My commute is 13ish miles one way, and I go home for lunch (a 5 hour lunch!) one to three days a week.  I got an old "beater" (97 Mazda Protege) for work that I will drive into the ground (or give to the kids when they reach driving age).

With my current commute it would probably end up around 7500, but I think I'll be moving soon so it might be close to 3000-3500.

About 10.000 km, which is about 6.000 miles.

The term "average year" is very difficult to define for a lot of suburbanite Americans because we get our licenses at 16, drive a lot throughout ages 16-18 (to high school and work and hanging out in fast food parking lots on the weekends), go to college at age 18 and barely drive at all (i.e. not at all between August and Thanksgiving Break of freshman year), and then bring our cars down to college between ages 19-22, yet barely drive while at college. So we only end up driving extensively during the summer for work during our college years, but make occasional treks back and forth between college and home (and maybe to Panama City for Spring Break). The number probably stabilizes after graduating college and acquiring gainful employment, unless one chooses grad school. But my point is that there is no "average" for a lot of Americans between the ages of 16-25 or so.

Big savings there, bgwah, good move.  My recent move puts me about half a kilometer farther from work, alas, and probably a few meters further from restaurants I favor.  That and the fact that I'm still moving after 3 months is making the whole affair difficult!

Now that I "work" more from home, about 12,000 miles per year perhaps. I still have to go up to LA a fair amount to harass my tenants. Smiley By the way, I just had repainted one of the triplexes. Isn't it pretty? Smiley  The evil psychopathic "entertainment" lawyer who allegedly also "works" from home and his continuously stoned  passive aggressive wife (on whom I think he relies financially) live in this building. So while it may be pretty on the outside, it's really rather ugly within. Sad   Never rent to a lawyer!

The "only" thing it has going for it, is that its woman allegedly put out without having to wine and dine them ad nauseam to induce them to open up. Not a very trivial thing come to think of it. Tongue

0. Have not driven a vehicle since Feb 2010, when I got to drive the company car doing security for the Olympics in Whistler.

However, I've been in numerous vehicles as a passenger.

I drive far much more than I'd really prefer. ~17.5 k miles is a conservative estimate, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 20k+.

Do you ever feel bored, or that the choices you made which lead to so much driving have a considerable downside in terms of your valuable time?

That's a nice looking house. How many properties do you rent?

Thank you. She is a rather grand old grey lady isn't she? Two triplexes, one duplex, and seven houses at the moment.

So 15 units, all by yourself? Do you feel like it's been a good investment?
