Not that she has been.  But what would the fallout of an event like that, and would it make any difference if it was a left-wing extremist or a right-wing extremist?

You should really put something in the title to clarify you're just asking a hypothetical.

The guy(s) that did it will spend 20 years in jail.  That's about it.

The unique misfortune of the Palestinian refugees is that they are a weapon in what seems to be a permanent war...today, in the Middle East, you get a repeated sinking sensation about the Palestinian refugees: they are only a beginning, not an end. Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad. The ultimate aim is not such humane small potatoes as repatriating refugees.

Either something in the title, or post it in the What If board.

Ursula von der Leyen becomes next Chancellor of Germany. Well, either her or Thomas de Maizière.

That is unless conservative anti-Merkel forces seize the opportunity and launch a coup to "take the party back". Tongue

Oh Gott, von der Leyen. If that woman led the CDU, I might as well really start casting votes for Greens.

Well, she's basically a left-winger, that's why I might as well vote for real Greens then for a Green that calls herself CDU.

"Zensursula" is certainly not a Green.

Besides, I can't detect much ideological difference between Merkel and von der Leyen. So, if von der Leyen is a Green, then Merkel is one too.

"Extremist" parties of both left and right take a big hit in popularity in Greece (and possibly a smaller hit in other European countries), CDU/CSU polls around 50% or so in Germany before falling again (but still with a large sympathy bump).  Whether it's a left-winger or a right-winger would mainly affect countries other than Greece and Germany.

No you're right. Green is wrong, perhaps nanny-stateish is the better word. I find the person very disagreeable and I would dispute that she's similar to Merkel. Zensur, Frauenquote (quota for women). I would have said minimum wage, but Merkel has joined her on that. (Which is one thing I happen to support.)

If von der Leyen had her way, she would probably ban or restrict anything that she deems harmful for her kids: Music with inapproriate content, obscene art, violent computer games, playing paintball, pornography, the Internet, alcohol, tobacco etc. Tongue

Mite hypocritical here, Ernest...

I know.  But an occasional foray into the domain of hackery does a body good, especially when that body is bored waiting for a certain decision to be made one way or the other.

Still, I am surprised that people seem to think that it would have almost no effect.  I disagree.  I think it would ruin any chance that the Germans would agree to any sort of Eurobond scheme, even if it made sense by German standards, lest it be thought that they were giving in to murderous Greeks.  It also would be bloody hell on the European financial markets.  I think the markets have price in the probable effect of Greece leaving the Euro, but think that will be as far as it goes.  If Merkel gets assassinated, then I can't see the Germans acting to stop on a runthe Spanish, Italian, or even French banks until they've had time to get over their shock.

Makes sense. Possible explanation: Both Germans and Greeks like cheese. So Merkel was probably at a local cheese trade show with Gov. Walker and the Greek extremist was a salesman at the fair and when Merkel arrived at his stand and she tried one of his cheese pieces, he gave her a poisoned one.

Must have been a left-wing extremist then, since pinkos wouldn't care if they got anti-stimulus Merkel or anti-union Walker.  Heck, Walker might have been the main target!
