Very few politicians actually dress that well, either on purpose or because our contemporary culture for some reason frowns on dressing respectably.

It's definitely that.

Huntsman was the only GOP candidate to dress nicely.

Something specific needs to be said about that deeply regrettable orange jumper.
At least orange jumper man looks like he wore the same sort of thing he wears every day of his own volition. (Sure, that still means he has no dress sense, but it's cooler than all the others if in a "so uncool it's cool" way.)

Van Rompuy clearly is thinking 'Wow, I pulled it off. They have to take me seriously now. Wow, all this on the back of never opening my mouth when I didn't have to. Wow, I can't believe I'm standing next to actual, real world leaders. Wow, can't believe this. Keep smiling.'

And while he does have a penchant for 'regrettable jumpers', I've definitely seen him dressed a lot better than that.

I hope you'll join with me in calling that lamentable. It is almost certainly contrived, far more than anyone dressing well would be, to have cuffs too long or jackets too loose, and avoid the appearance of expensive fine tailoring or costly cuffs or why not. According to what I've read it goes down to the placement of flag pins- one notices they never seem to be in the buttonholes as they ought to be. It's all a show. But it's both- because of the latter we have the former.

It's a valid question I'd say. The guy's insistence and devotion to formal dress is comparable to mine on wearing band shirts.

Far more, I'd say, but the thing about more formal dressing (for formal has a specific connotation) is that its core element is variability. One would not wear a morning suit to work, nor white tie to breakfast nor a tuxedo to a picnic. There are different roles for different rigs, and causal clothes- a very broad category that ranges from what these men are wearing to your band shirts- has its own, as well.

While I'd like to preface what I'm saying with the statement that Huntsman's fashion sense is not what attracted me to him, I agree that his casual wear was far better than anything the other candidates could muster. However his suits were nothing to write home about, but looking at his attire from the governorship, one sees a preponderance of grenadine ties and chalkstripe suits, leading me to believe he too intentionally "dumbed down" his attire.

Politicians not putting their flagpins in their lapel buttonholes is particularly annoying to me. There's literally a hole right there for you to do that, why would you make a new one?!

Seriously, politicians in general do dress in a horribly dull suit and tie combination, not to mention that lots of them have ugly suits.
Not saying that everyone should dress spectacularly, but if you can afford it you should at least put up an effort Tongue

And yeah, I'm with Simfan and Lief here. I love dressing up, it's a pity that for about half of the year it's basically impossible to wear a suit in Buenos Aires without melting, thanks to the 34ºC with a 100% humidity weather.
But when the temperatures goes down I basically wear suit and tie for everything except sleeping or showering Grin I even started wearing vests last year.

Linen, lightweight cotton, or if you're feeling adventurous, seersucker. But I salute you.

BTW, did you know that in the summer, the U.S. Senate instead of having Casual Fridays has Seersucker Thursdays.
