Smartest choice is Ayotte.  She'll bring in NH, help with women and younger voters.

Remember, the McCain states plus NC, FL, VA, IN, OH, and NH = 270 EVs.

I just thought of this last night. What about...... John McCain?

I was shot down for suggesting this a while back. But I actually think it would be an inspired choice that I could get behind. The man may not be the most conservative guy in the world, but he's got some "down home" appeal that makes him a lot more relatable to voters than Romney or Obama.

It'll never happen though.

That'd be a terrible pick.  He really doesn't bring much to the table other than a "down home" appeal, and factoring in his 2008 campaign, he really wouldn't add much to Romney's numbers.

I think if he picked McCain, there would be a national WTF moment and the party would just stand around confused for at least a few weeks.

Burr.

He's well-exposed, midly conservative, comes from a swing state, boring, and is a good speaker.  What more could Romney ask for?

Voted to repeal the DADT. Therefore he's an evil RINO.

If he's going for conservatism, Ryan's your man, but the Dems will rip him apart.

He needs a southerner on the ticket. Going with Thune will show that Romney doesn't give a **** about the South.

This is why he should go with Christine O'Donnell.

Obama has not had a single Southerner (black, white, or otherwise) in his cabinet -- probably the first President ever to show so much contempt for a region that holds 30% of the U.S. population.  I think even Lincoln had a Southerner or two (wasn't the slaveowning Blair the Postmaster General?) and he was in war against the South.
Steven Chu is from Missouri.
Also, in cabinet-level departments:
Lisa P. Jackson (EPA administrator) grew up in New Orleans
Ron Kirk (Trade representativE) is from Austin
Austin Goolsbee (the previous Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors) is from Waco.

Obama appointees = BAD

Obama'd just campaign against the SCOTUS. Same with any senator/congressman and Congress.

He should pick Gohmert. His impeachment plans against Kagan and his bold conservative leadership will only help Romney by energizing the base.

Alienating independents has worked so well in the past, hasn't it?

Romney doesn't have a problem with independents, he has a problem with the base.

It's not like the base is going to vote for Obama.

No sh*t! No one is going to vote for the Obumbler, but they may stay home or vote 3rd party. That's why I say to pick a true conservative for VP: Palin, Gohmert, Bachmann, or - as a dark horse - Mo Brooks.

This is my new favorite nickname. "The Obumbler". Sounds like some sort of Dr. Seuss character.

What about "The Beast"?

Bob McDonnell- takes VA off the map Doesn't do much in Virginia, maybe a point or so
Rubio- takes FL off the map
Christie- rallies the conservative base and makes NJ competitive New Jersey is not going red anytime soon, even with Christie on the ticket
Kasich- takes OH off the map in all likelyhood really not that popular, he might even hurt him.
Huntsman- moderate New England ticket never hurt the country but wouldn't be strategic Huntsman was Gov. of Utah and was probably the MOST conservative running this year, he just wasn't crazy enough.
Jeb Bush- would outshine Romney
Thune- safe pick
Brown- too early in his career
Pawlenty- safe pick
Jindal- safe pick
Daniels- safe pick
Haley- not enough momentum and there are better choices

I thought I would get the basics off of my chest. What do you guys think?

Fair enough but I think Ohio and most other states would vote for their governor. McDonnell is a very strong candidate and currently governs VA which is huge though. As for Huntsman he has a home in NH which is really all I was meaning. Plus he's also very moderate so I agree that he wouldn't help too much. I just listed any name that came to my mind. Who do you think would be the safest, most strategic, and most energetic? I'm liking this discussion.

They've done polls showing that Kasich and McDonnell wouldn't help. Has there been anything with Ayotte?

McDonnell's name seems to be floating around more recently than in previous weeks. Thoughts?

Still not gonna happen.
