I propose that we create a petition or election bylaw that every candidate running for the Senate or Presidency must have a platform.
The minnimum requirement would be a general statement on:

Abortion
Affirmative Action
Balanced Budget
Business Tax
Campaign Finance Reform
Ecology
Education
Free Trade
Gun Control
Gay Rights
Immigration
Military Funding
Military Intervention
Personal Tax
Public Health Care
Renewable Energy
Social Security
Terrorism

Will anyone else join me in this effort?

All organized parties need to have a platform of at least 200 words, addressing germane issues. If people want to run totally vacant campaigns, let them as far as I am concerned, just don't let them get elected.

It would be nice, but this has to be optional. I think all candidates should feel obligated to do this. Preston, if you want, you can start a thread for this. Not a bad idea at all.

One of the standards we should "rase" is spelling. Wink

It might stop avatarvoting, to an extent. But we can't restrict democracy like that, I feel.

Perhaps candidates nominated by parties should have to make a statement on whether they support the platform of that party or not? At least for organized parties.

"rase" as in "erase" or as in "raze"? Wink

Seeing as I was nearly defeated by a guy who did just that, I must say, I am sympathetic to this idea.

But, I don't think it will do much, as the problem is more with avatar voting.

Exactly.  I think though that people would be less likely to do that if they had access to each candidate's platform.

No they wouldn't. In every party their are people who I call pocket voters. They are inactive Atlasians who just come around and vote for the party that they belong to. This is used alot by the AFDNC, but it is also found in some Centrist parties and the AFRNC. These pocket voters will not be swayed by a post of campaign positions, their job is to vote for their party no matter what.

Actually, most of them are active in the important parts of the Forum, and vote on what they know about the candidates from there.
