Prime Minister Monti is aiming to be even more unpopular by calling for the most popular sport in Italy to be stopped for a few years in the wake of yet another betting scandal - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/soccer/05/29/italy.ap/index.html

I don't know if that's what needs to be done or not, but the cancer of soccer-related corruption has to be eradicated in one way or another.

That would basically destroy Italian soccer forever.

That would basically destroy Italian soccer forever.

...and many would argue that it would destroy Italy.

Monti went on to say that his comments weren't meant as a call from the government but as the desperate feelings of a lifelong fan, disgusted with the scandals.

Coincidentally, Monti made the comments alongside the Polish Prime Minister. I'm surprised Tusk didn't lean over and say, "And this is why your country lost out to mine to host the Euros."

And obviously, in that context they make perfect sense... but not in any other. Not that this will (or should, really) actually happen, of course.

I support this plan.

Why?  Italian soccer seems to be doing a fine job of destroying itself without any government intervention.

Except the last time this type of scandal happened, Italy won the World Cup. Remember that, Hugh? Great Round of 16 match!

Teamwork is important in football, so it is only natural that players who were used to working together even when nominally on opposing sides would do well when on the same side.  Wink

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it happens again this year.
