Trouble for CT Speaker Donovan

This is sure to damage his candidacy for CT-05 (I prefer Elizabeth Esty anyway).

Federal authorities have charged the finance director for state House Speaker Christopher Donovan’s congressional campaign with trying to hide campaign contributions of about $20,000, following an FBI undercover investigation of alleged influence-buying at the state Capitol.

"I want to commend the US Attorney's Office and the FBI for their diligence in the investigation and the speed in which they've taken action.  Law enforcement is in many ways the first and last line of defense for our taxpayers, and when an announcement like this happens, we should all be grateful for their work.

"These allegations are despicable.  While I am encouraged that the Speaker is cooperating with the investigation, his position requires that he give our residents a full explanation of what he knows.

"Allegations like this not only damage a campaign or a candidate, they also undermine citizen's belief in their government's ability to carry out its responsibilities."

This will get real nasty, real fast, I promise you.

Hopefully Donovan didn't know about this and (if he didn't) isn't hurt too much by it.  He seemed like a top-notch candidate.  That being said, I suppose Esty could probably still keep the seat Democratic.

He also has been under fire for being a member of a redistricting panel which, if he won the primary, would have drawn the very district he was going to compete in. The Democrats should let him keep his little Meriden fiefdom and choose someone else, ideally Esty.

I don't know how much this will hurt Donovan. Donovan has a big name in the liberal/progressive community. Could open up a door for another Dem to make a serious primary challenge at him.

Yeah but its still a competitive district though where either party(D or R) can win.

Sure. Donovan couldn't have changed that by being on the panel. But it certainly does not look good.
