Obama's Polish Death Camp gaffe was truly one for the record books, forcing the White House to issue a quick apology and forcing the President of the United States to send a contrite letter to the President of Poland.

Oh my.

Shades of Gerald Ford all over again.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/world/europe/poland-bristles-as-obama-says-polish-death-camps.html

A year later, the president made himself the target of a searing denunciation by Mr. Tusk after he referred on Tuesday to a “Polish death camp,” instead of a Nazi death camp in Poland, in bestowing a Presidential Medal of Freedom on Jan Karski, a hero of the Polish resistance to the Germans during World War II. Mr. Obama was guilty of “ignorance, lack of knowledge, bad intentions,” Mr. Tusk said.

The White House expressed regret for what it described as a “misstatement.” But Mr. Tusk was not mollified, saying in a statement posted on his Web site that the United States needed to “end this with class.” Poland’s president, Bronislaw Komorowski, sent a more diplomatically worded letter to Mr. Obama asking him to correct the record.

Really? Calling something in Poland Polish is worse than liking firing people?

OK, just deleted a couple of less-than-nice posts here.  Just a friendly reminder to everyone: Just because you think Winfield is being hackish doesn't give you license to hurl personal insults at him.  If you really don't think a particular poster is contributing anything, then put him on ignore.  No one's forcing you to read his threads.

That said, friendly moderator advice to Winfield: Please try not to start too many different threads on the same topic.  You seem to be starting a lot of new threads in the last 3 days on the general topic "Reasons why Romney is awesome and Obama is not".  I just merged two of them, because they were basically about the same thing.  This one is different enough, that I don't think it's a problem for it to exist on its own.  Though I do seem to remember an Obama/Polish death camp thread from a day or two ago, but can't find it now.  If someone can identify it, I'd be happy to merge this into that one.

Time to ban Winfield. He's crossed over from loveable hack to spamming troll.

Look, Winfield, I felt very unpleasant about Obama's gaffe (considering the fact that members of my family, both Polish and Jewish, actually went throught these camps). Yet I'm not going to be a little histerical hack about this. Obama made a blunder, but apologized in the letter.

I also feel very unpleaseant about you using this already like one-week old story, for your hackish spree.

Though I do seem to remember an Obama/Polish death camp thread from a day or two ago, but can't find it now.  If someone can identify it, I'd be happy to merge this into that one.

I've been the one who started the thread but after it went quite nasty, I deleted it. Well, I see this thread is going the same way.

One last thing: an official letter with apology is really a big deal in foreign relations. Especially knowing American President's reluctance to acknowledge mistakes in general. As a Pole, I'm fully satisfied with Obama's letter, which was pretty unprecedented thing. He took a full responsibility, acted with class.

Winfield, death camps subject is far too tragic and too sensitive to use it as a reason to post another "Romney is so awesome" thread. It's distasteful.

When you used Auschwitz as a campaign stop for your character in one of the what-if games, that was tasteless enough. No need to pull stuff like this again.

Now, can we please end this chapter?

Oh, step down off your soap boxes.

Obama moved this into the public domain for discussion.

If it had been Romney who had said this, then this thread would have been up to 16 pages by now of solid non-stop condemnation of Romney.

Mr. Morden, moderator, thank you for your timely comments.

Well taken by myself, and I hope by everyone.

Although, my intent is not to show "Romney is awesome and Obama is not."  My intent is to simply discuss issues raised by candidates.

As everyone is fully aware, this discussion board is full of threads attacking and condemning Romney for any and all conceivable reasons, some justified, most not so.

I simply believe there should be a more level playing field, therefore, I have to come to Romney's defense.

So, can't we refer to, say, Westerbork as a 'Dutch transit camp' anymore?

Sorry but a polish death camp gaffe isn't even as bad as Obama's on 57 states comment. Mitt's said a lot of dumb stuff from his 50.1% comment, his who let the dogs out moment, to 10K bet, to even his I like firing people comment.

Nah, there are a lot more serious things to condemn both Romney and Obama about.  However, I don't believe we have an pro-Obama poster who make the claim that a similar minor gaffe made by Romney was worse than anything Obama has done.  At least not seriously.  Maybe as a parody of your posting style.

This story is already like one week old and thing was setteled down already. I guess Winfield was looking really hard to find something for yet another thread, since it's pretty much a non-issue in the U.S.

For American citizen gaffe like "I like firing people" by a candidate, that is trying to present himself as a job creator is faaaaar more important than controversy over a term they don't understand.

Winfield should consider focusing his enormous energy on something actually constructive and he may achieve something.

While it was an unfortunate mistake, less than 10% of Americans will even grasp how the comment was a gaffe in the first place.  It will have absolutely no effect on the election.
