I made avatars of the German states.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3rRB4mCzT_hM0s5S2IyRlk5S00/edit?pli=1

Example:

To whom do I send these if I want them to be added?

This is an American-focused forum, not a German (or even a European) forum.  National avatars are enough for international posters here (outside the United States and Canada).  I don't see any reason to change it.  Not to mention it is confusing for most of us who are not intimately familiar with Germany.

Socialist avatar for New York would be awesome.

It won't happen, but I can dream.

The problem is the colour, when D is red. What would you prefer?

Valid point, but would have been more reasonable if Canadian province avatars wasnt allowed. Either US only or a little more tolerance.

Maybe relatively well known entities like Australian states, countries in the UK (Wales etc.) and German states could be acceptable after all.

They look great and you clearly put a lot of time and effort in, but yeah, few posters or visitors to the forum will have any idea what any of these avatars are meant to represent.  Sorry.

Canada is a special exception due to history and the fact that most of our compatriots who fled the colonies after the Revolutionary War settled in Canada. But I wouldn't have any objections to having separate English, Welsh, and Scottish avatars due to Britain being the mother country.

We have had posters from all three of those countries, though.  That's why I made them.

I would suggest removing the American and Canadian state avatars in favor of national ones instead.
And add national avatars for all the countries in the world. O-Micronesia ftw!

Bad argument. There is a clear difference between sovereign countries and states in a federation.

I'll get in before afleitch and ask could we please have these Scottish avatars?

And of course, for all you crazy Brits, help yourselves:

Note:  because the individual countries in the UK don't have their own 2-letter abbreviations as far as I can tell, the ones I used are arbitrary.  I know that 'NI' is already used by Nicaragua, but I think we can just hope that we don't get a forum member from there who wants an avatar of their own.  And I used 'SO' and 'WL' instead of 'SC' and 'WA' because I didn't want to use the same letters as South Carolina and Washington.  I know this doesn't seem to matter in the case of Germany and Delaware, so if you guys think it would make more sense the other way I can easily change it.

Do you mean the French departments or the historical provinces?

For that matter, can anyone really tell the departments apart by shape, devoid of other info?

I'm pretty sure more people outside the US can tell the more important French departments apart than most American states.

And he said Regions, so I wonder what the hell Mikado is up to. "American states? Do you mean traditional Native American territories or the Census Bureau regions?"

My suggestion is as follows: Get rid of state avatars, replace them with Federal Reserve District avatars.

There are 101 departements. I think nobody would seriously ask him to do 101 avatars just for France.

Regions are only 27, however.

I have already asked that question earlier on, so see the answer to that.

But in general of course an independent country like Portugal is a better known and more important entity than, say, Bavaria.
I fully agree with your toughts. But your argument was weak, thats all.
