Why did this look (complete with a full suit) go out of fashion?

Because it looks idiotic. That, and because of the rise of air conditioning and lower roofs on cars. And the fact that almost an entire generation of men had to stick helmets on their heads and by 1945 were sick of them.

Because JFK didn't wear one at his inauguration.

Because JFK didn't wear one at his inauguration.

That's a thoroughly debunked myth. Anyways, inaugurations traditionally called for morning dress, and with that top hats, and JFK wore one.

JFK simply mirrored a trend. Alas, I honestly bemoan the three-piece suit more. Ford was the last to regularly wear them.

Out of fashion? No. Seldomly worn? Yes. I have been known to wear a fedora once in a while. But then again, I am the "hatman".

I agree, my love, and I must say that you pull it off very well.

Any particular item of clothing or style is going to be flooded out of the market by the next new trend, however popular said clothing or style were at the time. Of course, if one generation loved something, subsequent generations are likely to love it as well, and fedoras fit the bill; BUT, people may be wary of wearing it because of the fedora's association with pimps.

Actually, maybe that's the reason some people *cough* Earl *cough* are so adamant about wearing one whenever they go out.

Earl, do you mind if I refer to myself as your bottom bitch? Just, y'know, as an expression of my love for you.

There's no need for hats now that we spend so much time indoors. The fedora was just a vestigal remnant of a less comfortable time. Screw suits and hats and ties.

I have two.  The black one I already showed you guys in the Post a Pic thread a few days ago.  Though that was with a dressier outfit, I'll sometimes wear it with jean cutoffs, a cotton button-down and chucks, or something like that.  The other fedora is straw, you know, for summer.  I wore that one all day today.  Smiley

I'm inclined to say that's a trilby.

Ok I'll give you that.  I associate traditional fedoras with 1940's journalists and Indiana Jones.

He might be, if he were wearing a fedora instead of a trilby.

Fedoras look atrocious on nearly everyone who attempts to pull them off. I've found that they're generally unstylish tools.

Cabby hats are pretty cool: working class vibes, fits modern dress and a variety of age groups.

Never saw my granddad without one.

Yes, flat caps are good. I wear one.

As for fedoras and related forms of headgear, my Grandad used to wear tweed ones with short brims.

You're not going to pull off the fedora look well in this century.  You'll look like a terrible nerd who thinks he's living in a different epoch and didn't even know how to dress himself then.

For some strange reason, here fedoras became a basic hipster attirement in the last few years. Once nobody used hats since the late 50's (except for sport ones), I thought It was one of those imported trends, but for what you talking, I guess It isn't that way, is It?
