Out of fashion? No. Seldomly worn? Yes. I have been known to wear a fedora once in a while. But then again, I am the "hatman".

Any particular item of clothing or style is going to be flooded out of the market by the next new trend, however popular said clothing or style were at the time. Of course, if one generation loved something, subsequent generations are likely to love it as well, and fedoras fit the bill; BUT, people may be wary of wearing it because of the fedora's association with pimps.
Actually, maybe that's the reason some people *cough* Earl *cough* are so adamant about wearing one whenever they go out.
