It looks like there are enough votes here to overcome a presidential veto -I think.

This bill has enough votes to pass, Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.

Actually, Frodo, it is one short by my count on that front.

This is enough for the Senate not to override the veto, correct?

I would strongly urge you to not quote another Senator's votes.

If pic failed to load for some reason, I would have to count it as another change to Nay, Clarence. Tongue

It needs 7 ayes to overide a veto. Thus 4 Nays would preserve a veto.

Vote on Final Passage of the Home and Private Schooling Tax Credit Act:

Aye (6): AndrewPA, Ben, Clarence, NC Yankee, TJ in Cleve and Wormyguy
Nay (3): ILV, sbane, and Seatown
Abstain (1): Scott

Didn't Vote (0): It's a miracle. If you only you believe like I believe baby, like I believe, we'd get byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I'd continue but Marty Balin does it far better then I can.

With six votes in the affirmative the Home and Private Schooling Tax Credit Act has passed (and so have your ears most likely) the Senate and is sent to the White House for executive action.

I did think long and hard about this one, but came to the final conclusion of a) it might be the role of the Government to provide parents with options in education, but not to pay for an option to undermine the public system b) the Bill refers to 'private institutions' as receiving no government funding... but says nothing about accreditation or the role if regional governments.

I would see this Bill as both overreach and undermining our public system.

Mr. President Pro Tempore or any one who knows... what is the procedure for a veto override?

Mr. President Pro Tempore- I request a veto override

The end goal of our government should be to increase power directly to the people... if that means putting money in their pocket to make their own school choice, I believe that is important. I also believe every Senator and the President would agree with me that our public schools are sufering from overcrowding and this would alleviate that... I proudly stand by this legislation which passed by a majority vote and ask my fellow Senators to stand with me

I don't see where there is any debate time required for this so I guess we proceed right to the vote.

Senators, a vote is now open on the question of whether to override the President's veto of the Home and Private Schooling Tax Credit Act, please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain.

Nay.

Upon consideration, I decided that it ought to be a priority of our government to work to improve public schools before we pass legislation that would weaken them.

Aye.

Nothing in this legislation whatsoever "weakens public schools."  In fact, practically by definition, per-pupil funding would increase.  All this does is allow disadvantaged students the opportunity to enjoy the same privilege - private education - as their more wealthy peers.  That certain minority elements within this Senate are more preoccupied with the desires of the teachers' unions than the needs of our most vulnerable schoolchildren is telling.

I don't think this impacts public schools too much. The problem is that the federal government shouldn't be giving tax credits for things the regions fund, it should be left up to those regions.
