At least among whites:
Romney leads Obama among middle income votersBy BYRON TAU | 6/4/12 4:28 PM EDTMitt Romney has a lead over President Obama among middle income voters, a new survey finds.
Gallup finds that among voters with a household income of $36,000 to $89,999, Romney leads Obama 49 percent to 45 percent. Among lower income voters, Obama leads by a 15 point margin, besting Romney 53 percent to 38 percent.
And among upper income voters who report a household income of $90,000 or more, Obama trails Romney 45 to 49 percent. Among registered independents who make between $36,000 and $89,999, Romney has an 8 point advantage, leading 48 percent to 40 percent.
However, controlling for race, Obama has a huge lead among nonwhite voters of all classes, and trails among whites at all income levels. Obama beats Romney among lower-income nonwhites 80 percent to 12 percent, a 68 percent gap. Among middle income and upper income nonwhite voters, Obama has a 55 point lead and a 52 point lead, respectively.
Among white lower-income voters, Obama trails Romney 50 to 40 percent. Among middle income ($39-$89.9K), Obama trails by 19 points, 56 percent to 37 percent. And among upper income whites, Obama trails 40 to 54 percent. The results are based on Gallup's daily tracking poll, during a period in which Obama and Romney were tied nationally at 46 percent a piece.
Both candidates have made middle class security a top theme — with Romney emphasizing job creation and Obama emphasizing education, tax cuts and preserving the social safety net.
