At least among whites:

Romney leads Obama among middle income voters

By BYRON TAU | 6/4/12 4:28 PM EDT

Mitt Romney has a lead over President Obama among middle income voters, a new survey finds.

Gallup finds that among voters with a household income of $36,000 to $89,999, Romney leads Obama 49 percent to 45 percent. Among lower income voters, Obama leads by a 15 point margin, besting Romney 53 percent to 38 percent.

And among upper income voters who report a household income of $90,000 or more, Obama trails Romney 45 to 49 percent. Among registered independents who make between $36,000 and $89,999, Romney has an 8 point advantage, leading 48 percent to 40 percent.

However, controlling for race, Obama has a huge lead among nonwhite voters of all classes, and trails among whites at all income levels. Obama beats Romney among lower-income nonwhites 80 percent to 12 percent, a 68 percent gap. Among middle income and upper income nonwhite voters, Obama has a 55 point lead and a 52 point lead, respectively.

Among white lower-income voters, Obama trails Romney 50 to 40 percent. Among middle income ($39-$89.9K), Obama trails by 19 points, 56 percent to 37 percent. And among upper income whites, Obama trails 40 to 54 percent. The results are based on Gallup's daily tracking poll, during a period in which Obama and Romney were tied nationally at 46 percent a piece.

Both candidates have made middle class security a top theme — with Romney emphasizing job creation and Obama emphasizing education, tax cuts and preserving the social safety net.

This would have to be good news for Romney, as most of the electorate is middle income, but clearly he has a lot of work to do amongst lower income voters.

These numbers seem about right, though I suspect that the numbers will look a bit more class-based once the full campaign starts and the economy becomes even more central; in a 50/50 race, Romney should do better with upper-income voters than he is here.

35% of low-income voters are brainwashed by conservative faux news. use that number as a baseline for other groups.

He will lose them once his wealth becomes too much for the white middle class in America.

For the racial divide -- it may be that non-whites (and non-Christians)  have more cause to be scared for loss of status (and of course income) under a right-wing Administration.

Why? It's not like they ask about your religion.

$36k-$90k/year is middle class? I distinctly remember the entire GOP caucus telling me that $250k is middle class. $36k-$90k sounds more like those lazy overpaid teachers.

I'm sure Obama will win poor whites, just like last time.

Much like Kerry (D) lost their vote when his wealth became "too much?"

Are you suggesting those windsurfing photos were helpful?
