Since nobody has had this idea yet, I'll be running the competition this time around.

Rules:

Incorrect outcome (win instead of loss, draw instead of...etc.): 0 points
Correct outcome (correctly predicted win, loss or draw): 1 point
Correct outcome + correct goal difference (only applicable in non-draws): 2 points
Correct outcome + correct score: 3 points

Bonus: Predict the correct Euro winner, and receive 15 bonus points or "n" points, corresponding to the number of calender days the prediction is made (Central European Daylight Time is relevant.) before the final, whichever is SMALLER. (Example: Predict the right winner 3 weeks before the final, get 15 points. Predict in 1 week before the final, get 7 points.) Overall winner predictions MAY be revised, but are subject to a 5 point penalty (only applied to the potential bonus, not your other points)! So choose carefully!

Tips will be accepted until the kick-off of the game being predicted. Tips may be placed in advance, if necessary, but for organizational reasons, I would appreciate not doing it too far in advance.

After the group stage, tips are to describe the final result of the game with the EXCEPTION of penalties. So disregarding the length of the game (90 or 120 min.), predict the score. If you predict a tie, you may receive 1 bonus point for predicting the WINNER after penalties!

All decisions regarding the distribution of points and interpretations lie totally in the organizer's (me) discretion. All rulings are final and cannot be appealed.

A report on the current standings will be posted daily (when warranted).

Enjoy!

The 2 points for correct goal difference only for non-draws, right?

And I would suggest tipping the final result before penalties if necessary.

Eh...I'm wary of predicting exact score lines but I always like a challenge. Smiley

I do beg that we keep actual discussion of the tournament in the other thread, please.

I had rather a lot more rules in the 2010 tipping competition...

...but it made tallying the results a bastard of a job. Simple is good.

I did of course win the duty of running the 2014 competition, and will honor that promise if the forum is still around and livable in then.

Here's the full set of scoring rules for 2010:

Tip scoring:
Tip win correct 5 points.
Tip win, match drawn 2 points.
Tip win, opponents win 0 points.
Tip draw correctly 6 points.
Tip draw incorrectly and the winning margin is 1 goal, 1 point.
Tip draw with a bigger winning margin -1 point.

Scores scoring:
Margin correct 2 points.
Goals correct team 1, team 2, 1 point each.
Both correct bonus 1 point.
Both incorrect -1 point.

All games in a day correct 5 bonus points.
All games in a group correct 10 bonus points.
Tip Cup winner correct 1 point per day before the match you make your prediction.
Cost to change cup winner prediction -2 points.

Too much, but for the world cup a bit more complexity than this may be appropriate...it'll be interesting to see what Lewis has in store for us.

One thing I will add is the bonus for predicting the overall winner. Considering the low number of points overall, I'll do 15 points or n number of calender days (Central European time applies) until the final, whichever is lesser.

Sound ok?

Sounds reasonable, and I'll put in a tip for Germany to win the title.

I'd also suggest a -2 or -3 point penalty for changing winner prediction, but allow it to happen.

I've made it 5, hoping to discourage the practice Smiley

May I log in your pick for Germany at this point, considering that?

Alright then, I think the set of rules (posted in the original thread starting post) is now final and good to go.

Missing anything?

I don't know exactly how I ended the 2010 world cup tipping, but I remember I did pretty well, so I should give this a shot Tongue

I'm still in time to tip for the 2nd match, right?

If so, Russia to win 2-1

And Netherlands to win it all
