Of the following most recent people who lost in a presidential election and never became president, who would win if they all faced off in a primairy?

Goldwater or Dole.  The liberals will be too divided.

Either Goldwater or Humphrey. They're both great.

Mondale couldn't even win his old Senate seat.

A post 1980 Goldwater, when he became more libertarian, could have won.

I'd agree...these days, Goldwater could be quite popular.

I can see Al Gore winning by 500k votes but not having enough ec votes.

He would have my vote...the man's a saint.

In my opinion their are many better leftists and Democrats who can be your saint. The man is very much a footnote in history. A Democratic Senator who did not aquire much fame while in the Senate, a VP who was overshadowed by his popular President, a Presidential candidate that lost albeit by a small margin, and then a man who went off and grew a beard. Probably in your books you think he won and sanctified him since he had "beaten" Mr. Bush.

You could probably be right... but theres something about him that I just like.

I'm also fond of Kerry (and I honestly have no idea why).

Well that's a fine reason to like somebody. I have some people who that's the best description I can find for liking them.

Of course I was too young during his campaign. I just remember the SNL Gore.

And from what I hear, they are two different people.

Well I was only 11 when that election was held so I don't remember much either. One of the people I have always liked for some odd reason is John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia. Maybe its just because I like Aussies in General and being an Aussie Conservative that gives him doubles points.

Heh, during the Gore campaign, I was like 10 or 11, and I remember being fanatically devoted, and so disappointed when he lost, even though I didn't really understand it or know why I was so devoted, at the time. Smiley  Now, however, I can consider the facts a little more clearly. *g*

I like Al Gore because he wasn't politically savvy enough to hide the fact that he wanted to be President very badly, and because I feel sorry for him, due to all the jokes which he is the butt of.

I was the same...except I was about 13-14. I guess kids who will eventually get interested in politcs liked him better.

I remember staying up all night on election night. I thought we had it when the announced Florida for Gore, and when they took it back my heart sank.

"Governor Bush, what is your reaction now to the results so far in this election?"

(Bush leans back in his chair lazily, as he was on election night 2004): "Well, it looks like the networks have called this thing already. I've switched to watching CNN now."

(Why is he watching CNN? He never explains. I go downstairs to the satellite hookup and turn on CNN. It shows Florida grey.)

That was the beginning of the long collapse for Gore.
