This reminds me to check out what the map for the attempt to block the removal of the Fighting Sioux nickname looked like. I should also call and see if my parents voted against this (they tend not to vote in primary elections but I know my mom at least felt strongly opposing the failed attempt to abolish property taxes and keeping the Fighting Sioux nickname so she might've this time.)
It only passed in five counties:
Golden Valley
Logan
Emmons
Billings
Stark
All over 60% McCain.
Those are all basically insanely desolate rural counties that kind of look like something out of a science fiction or fantasy movie at night or during the winter (OK night during the summer is more like a horror movie.) The exception is Stark, which is actually a somewhat populated area (the county seat has a five digit population and 24-hour services, which is notable in North Dakota) and a small university, so kind of an oddity. Billings is consistently the most Republican county in the state despite being an area
heavy in tourism, though very few people actually live there.
The five best counties (against the amendment) are:
Divide
Cass
Ransom
Traill
Sargent
Divide is surprising, but the others voted Obama.
Anyone know anything else about such counties?
The most urban county in the state, some random assorted wheat farming/Norwegian rural counties (which are still willing to vote Democratic unlike the German ranchers) and an odd county in the northwest corner of the state that is actually more Democratic than recent Presidential results lets up.
