And in other news, our old friend Zawahiri has accused SCAF of being American puppets:

He also urged Egypt to ditch its peace treaty with Israel.

Ditching the treaty would be the worst thing Egypt has done for itself since the last time they declared war on Israel.

The unique misfortune of the Palestinian refugees is that they are a weapon in what seems to be a permanent war...today, in the Middle East, you get a repeated sinking sensation about the Palestinian refugees: they are only a beginning, not an end. Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad. The ultimate aim is not such humane small potatoes as repatriating refugees.

President Morsi throws down gauntlet, demands the return of Parliament by the 15th.  No SCAF response yet.

Morsi's been sworn in and all, right? So what's SCAF still doing? Didn't they handover power at the end of last month?

I haven't read the article, but I firmly support Simfan's efforts to blame Lena Dunham for our society's rot.

Shadow government.  The military has run Egypt for 60 years and owns 50% of the country's businesses etc.  They are not about to peacefully submit to being servants after being the masters for so long, esp. to the Brotherhood, whose members they have imprisoned and tortured from the 1950s to near-present.

The Supreme Court said that the electoral system used for the election of Parliament was unconstitutional, so they threw everyone in Parliament out of office, and SCAF claimed legislative powers for itself until after a new constitution is written and a new Parliament is elected.  Morsi doesn't view that action as legitimate, and wants Parliament back.

So, here's the latest on the effort to reinstate Parliament:

http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/47308.aspx

Parliament convened today, in defiance of the court order for Parliament to be dissolved.  The military guards guarding the parliament building didn't stop the legislators from entering, or anything like that.

However, Parliament only convened for a few minutes, just for long enough to lodge an appeal with the courts to reconsider Parliament's dissolution.  I guess they're not going to meet again until the court rules.  If the court rules against them again, then I don't know what's going to happen.  Could get ugly.

It was mostly the Islamists who showed up today.  The secular liberals said they wanted to respect the existing court order, and wouldn't show up.

Excellent.  At least the non-Islamists are realizing that a return to the old order is much better for their interests than democracy.
