Including Caesar might be a bit of a stretch, but his works seem to occupy a half-way point between memoirs and history. As you can see from Josephus and Polybius, I'm also using a pretty broad definition of "Roman."

There's an "Other" option for you Velleius fans and the like, but don't cheat and choose someone like Pliny the Elder.

Of the eight listed, I would rank Tacitus at the very top, with Josephus at the very end.

BTW, listing Polybius but not Plutarch?

I've only read a bit of Livy, so I have to vote for him.  I came into this thread all ready to say "Edward Gibbons!"

Well, I left off Plutarch for the same reason I left off Suetonius. They're really more biographers than historians.
