HERSHEY — Pennsylvania Republicans celebrated news on Saturday that a poll done for the state party by a professional pollster shows GOP nominee Mitt Romney within striking distance of President Obama in the Keystone State.

Party Chairman Rob Gleason and other party leaders told state committee members meeting here that Romney is only five points behind Obama in Pennsylvania in the poll provided to the GOP last week.

“This state is very much in play for November,” said Bob Asher of Montgomery County, a fundraiser and national committeeman representing Pennsylvania. “It will not be conceded by the Romney campaign.” The poll wasn’t available.

Officials said it was conducted by Susquehanna Polling, a Harrisburg-based polling company headed by pollster James Lee.

Lee could not be reached yesterday. He is one of the state’s top pollsters.

The Susquehanna poll shows the “distinct possibility” Romney can carry the state, Allegheny County Republican Chairman Jim Roddey said.

Susquehanna should be treated as an internal, especially this one, because the polling company is headed by former RNC operatives. So, actually Obama by 8-10.

Delusion springs eternal.

Always a bad sign when you leak an internal poll that has you behind. Obama's looking good in Pennsylvania.

Romney maybe behind but this doesn't mean much(like any other poll) since it's still early on in the game.

Wait until late August at the least to start drawing conclusions.

It's still clear that Pennsylvania is not flipping, if an internal can't even manage a tie, it's not a sign of a potential win. The actual numbers weren't even released, which is odd.

No absolute numbers, only a margin. That makes it easy to set Romney at the Republican floor (or even a little lower) and have very high undecideds.

Didn't Romney already give up on PA? Maybe if he has a big lead nationally in September/October, he'll make an eleventh hour push for it. Otherwise, forget about it.

Susquehanna is a topnotch pollster.

They're polling for the RNC and Obama's still in the lead.

Probably because he is in the lead....by roughly 5 points of course.

This is basically a Republican internal.

It should also be noted that the pollster had Romney up 2 in February, so he's lost ground.
