Emily Cole, a 23-year-old college student who participated in the survey, said that although she's more conservative than Obama on economic policies, she still plans to vote for him.

Obama's supportive stance on abortion rights, same-sex marriage and other "civil rights" matters, Cole said, are more important than monetary policy.

"Definitely for my generation, that's a big concern," the Virginia Beach resident said. "We're not willing to compromise on that."

Yes, because the typical young voter is a stupidhead who isn't a Republican doesn't understand the issues.

Because I'm sure all Republican voters are fully aware of the issues. And yeah, this is probably too high. Virginia is a pure toss-up.

In what way, buddy? She's not wrong about Obama, except for the part about her being more economically conservative than him (he's very economically conservative).

That's why Republicans have seen previously solid states slip away, they don't get that they need moderates to win elections.

Essentially a junk poll since there is track record to judge it by.  The sole thing that keeps this from being utter junk is that the results of the question on who the respondents voted for in 2008, the results mirror those of the actual election.

Democrats that are conservative on economic issues frustrate me, even though I was basically just like them many years ago.

The level of misunderstanding between young and old folks, especially over Obama, is astounding.

My 81 year old grandmother doesn't understand why a smart kid like me was 'tricked' by a snake like Obama, and I can't understand why she was tricked by Fox News into believing that Obama would personally force her into a death panel.

Interesting. A New We Ask America poll out today has Romney leading in Virginia 48-43%.

Are civil rights more important than monetary policy?

It's a moral choice. Homosexual rights and reproductive choice are moral issues. "More to the right of President Obama" but finding Mitt Romney and the GOP enablers of plutocracy too far to the right? We are going to see much of that.

No -- if that was so, I'd have a D-IL avatar. (Actually, I'd have a D-OH avatar or so. I don't think I could bear the shame of being an Illinois Democrat).

It's a moral choice. Homosexual rights and reproductive choice are moral issues. "More to the right of President Obama" but finding Mitt Romney and the GOP enablers of plutocracy too far to the right? We are going to see much of that.

It depends on what sense. It's becoming likely (the way I see it) that as libertarianism becomes more prominent within the GOP, the GOP will soon turn hard left on so-called 'social issues', most prominently gay rights but also on the role of religion in society in general -- probably within the next 15 years. On the other hand, with things like opposition to the healthcare bill, and Citizens United, it seems the opposite process is taking place in regards to monetary policy. Particularly with younger voters, you will find a lot of people who agree with 'plutocracy' but just don't like the 'plutocratic' opposition to things like gay rights and abortion.

Or maybe I'm deluding myself by telling myself my mixture of opinions will become more mainstream in the future Tongue

She is not unintelligent just because she emphasizes on different values than you do.

Maybe not unintelligent. But possibly misguided. I bet she'll change her mind once she's spent some more time in the working world.

Spending time in the working world is precisely what turned me into a socialist, Hag.  I think nowadays, given the terribly low wages, lack of worker protections, and the high level of unemployment, the experience of 'the working world' will tend to make people vote Democratic, not Republican.

I don't really get why anyone would want a plutocracy. Perhaps you can explain. Even the vast majority of Republicans don't think they are voting for one.

Also things like abortion rights are important to women and gay rights are important to those with gay friends. Republican guys probably don't understand that. Instead of complaining that she is stupid, why don't you clear the crazy and bigoted from your party? Though that would halve the votes Republicsns get so maybe that's not such a good idea.

Yes, she'll probably stop being more economically conservative than Obama after doing that.

You know what I'm looking forward to? The moment at the convention where Romney announces that, at his insistence, the Republican Party has removed all mention of abortion and same-sex marriage from its platform, in order to concentrate on more important issues like monetary policy.
Won't that be awesome?
