link'd

Crystal's team developed a vaccine that contains a virus consisting of a genetic sequence they engineered from a nicotine antibody, and injected it into the liver of mice. The injection genetically modifies the liver to churn out nicotine antibodies, along with other cells it typically makes, thus providing a nicotine antibody "factory" in the body. That suggests the effect won't diminish over time like that of other antibodies. The antibodies then work by targeting the nicotine cells within seconds of exposure and preventing them from reaching receptors in the brain that provide the "chill out" feeling, as Crystal called it.

Good. Remove the will to smoke and eventually you'll remove smoking.

I somehow doubt that many people who want to quit smoking are going to want to genetically modify their liver to do so, and you're certainly not going to get people who don't smoke in the first place to do it.

On the other hand, I've read polling numbers asserting that nearly three-quarters of smokers would like to quit and that a similar percentage feel they are addicts. Finding a way to liberate users from the hook of nicotine could be a big step in the direction of reducing tobacco consumption.

If they've tried to quit before and failed, it's more than likely they'd try this as another option.

Genetic modification would be seen as a bit creepy, methinks. They'd probably try one of the other methods or move to e-cigs.

However, I'm fairly certain there's a lot more dangerous things in a cigarette than nicotine.

There are, but it's the nicotine that causes you to keep smoking and inhaling the dangerous things.

Today, perhaps, but genetic modification is the future.

Hence the whole point of things like Nicorette and nicotine patches. Which are also designed to help you quit eventually, this does so much simpler.

The buzz after smoking is a good feeling. Nicotine is not dangerous per se, it's what's in the cigarette that gets them fancy labels thrown on the side.

That's only part true.

Which part isn't true? The part that means nicotine acts on the mesolimbic pathway to release dopamine which causes it to be about as addictive as cocaine or heroin? That's why we have these nicotine patches and nicotine gum, it's so addictive that it's that difficult to stop. Or do you mean the heart attack/stroke/COPD/emphysema/cancer (lung, larynx, mouth, pancreatic, bladder)/Crohn's disease part, the part about #1 preventable risk to human health in developed countries and an important cause of premature death worldwide? Cause we've know about that since the 1910s (Der Tabakgegner).

20RP12: Nicotine is actually dangerous, 30-60 mg can be fatal (a cigarette is about 1 mg), cause it's a stimulant, so if you're smoking while using nicotine patches and/or nicotine gum, you could overdose on nicotine.
