First he has to pick up Indiana and NE-02; these will be the first to fall, and if they're tossups, it's over for Mitt (it probably also means he's down in Missouri and/or Arizona). Then would come North Carolina and Florida, bringing him to 235 electoral votes. Now he has to win Ohio and Virginia, taking him to 266. The remaining 4 will come from one of Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, or New Hampshire

Romney must absolutely win the Green states, and then must win any one of the Yellow states to reach 270+.

Well, he needs to win Utah. If he can't win there, he can't win anywhere.

He needs to win Massachusetts and California?

Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, and one of these: New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, Colorado or Nevada.

Technically this is more correct:

This map nails it. The Republican strategy for this election is the following:

First, win all McCain states (defending all that are in peril – e.g. Arizona)
Then, win the three reliable Bush states – Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia
Then, win the two Republican leaning swing states – Florida and Ohio

This completes the green states – must win states for Romney.

Then, win one other state – any of the yellow states.

Obviously, Romney will only compete in the green and some of the yellow states.

There are a couple states on that that aren't swing states (New Mexico & Georgia are the most obvious), so why are they colored?

The meaningful states to answer here are Ohio and Virginia; winning those implies having won Florida, NC, and Indiana (which is safe R), and of the others he needs to get over 268, no particular one of them is a must-win.

Red - Obama base
Blue - Romney base
Green - the Romney-cannot-win-without-these states
Grey - the lean Romney and lean Obama states that push Romney over the 270 mark...

Here's how I see the map right now:

Dark blue:  Romney's no matter what
Blue: Romney's unless Obama pulls a landslide
Light blue: Should be Romney's but Obama has a chance
Green: Total tossup
Pink: Should be Obama's but Romney has a chance
Red: Obama's unless Romney pulls a landslide
Dark red: Obama's no matter what

Romney needs all the blues and greens plus either Virgina or any two of the other pink states.

Right now I think Ohio should be pink
