From the BBC and anywhere else on the internet:

Quote
The US Supreme Court has upheld the individual mandate at the heart of President Obama's healthcare law as constitutional.

EDIT: From SCOTUSblog -

Quote
"The individual mandate survives as a tax" and "The mandate is constitutional. Chief Justice Roberts joins the left of the Court".

From Ezra Klein's twitter  feed.

Wow. So Kennedy voted with conservatives, Roberts with liberals. Umpire, indeed.

No, I can't have Kennedy as a loser on an important vote. My main premise that the court is arbitrary, random and capricious hinges on the fact that whatever Kennedy wants he gets.

According to the majority the act successfully framed the penalty for uninsured individuals as a tax based on one's income. They then cited cases to support their contention that the failure of Congress to call it a tax was no reason for the Court to not call it what it really is.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Even more shocked that it was Roberts who swung it.

I'm withholding my opinions until I read through it.  Which could take a while.

J.J., I wanted to congratulate you on your assignment "A Typical Day In My Life". I think you did a superb job with it. So good that I think I'll share it with everyone else.
