China is taking an interest in California's effort to jumpstart its high speed rail network, and wants to sell its high speed rail trains to the Golden State

Should we accept the offer?

Good; anything to reduce the number of SUVs on the roads.

It bothers me to be sharing a transit line with Los Angeles, but it's a little better knowing that it takes a detour through Real Cal'fornia.

I can't wait to take the train from Merced to Fresno!

They're doing it in pieces- the worst pieces to start- and setting the whole scheme up to fail. Which would be a tragedy. Track-sharing in the Bay and SoCal? It's almost laughably bad.

Its so sad that the same misunderstandings crop up so much.

the initial segments will be operated by existing conventional services (among Amtrak's most popular, I might add) at higher speeds until they're able to run trains over Tehachapi pass.

As so for track sharing, while it is certainly sub-optimal, electrification of the caltrain corridor provides the space needed to operate a blended service.  At the LA end, they'll make the track capacity they need, as metrolink doesn't run all that many trains up to Palmdale. It certainly doesn't preclude a future dedicated route.

Many TGV lines use conventional speed terminal railroads to gain access to cities

It will be finished on about 1/3 of the total distance in 2018.  This will significantly decrease the trip time and demand will rise accordingly...especially for central valley residents who are likely to be the most loyal users anyway.

Hopefully Central Valley voters will wise up and stop electing anti-HSR politicians like House Majority Leader McCarthy.

I had a flight from LA to SF where the time from when the flight was supposed to be in the air until when it actually landed (3 1/2 hours) was greater than the HSR time from LA to SF.

The swiftest route would be parallel to Interstate 5, except that there are no cities between Stockton and Greater Los Angeles on Interstate 5 (as if we didn't already know that) ... this train is really being built to connect the southern Central Valley cities (Madera, Fresno, Tulare, and Bakersfield) to the much-richer Bay Area and the Southland. Maybe there would be some interesting connections -- Sacramento and Stockton; Salinas and Monterrey; San Diego; and (what would be extremely suitable destination for a super-train) Las Vegas.

Considering how expensive LA, Bay Area and Silicon Valley real estate costs are, it could have some commuting value for those who could start their workday commuting.

Yes but the fact is by waiting to extend service to the main points on the line (ie SF and LA), this opens up opportunities for the funding for the eventual extension to the two cities. It's possible people may come crying about boondoggles, enough to shut it down before that happens (by 2028?)- which is especially a risk here in CA because of the ability to put it in a ballot initiative, where people are simply going to be hearing of staggering losses and anemic passenger numbers.

Without judicious use of the water cannon and the truncheon there will inevitably be massive delays and cost overruns- it's a matter of not losing the nerve, which only becomes more and more difficult as time drags on.

Most recent estimate on average train fares if this line were running today (from Los Angeles to San Francisco) would be about $86.00 -a bargain compared to its peers in East Asia and Europe.

On a related note, it looks like the Las Vegas high speed rail project might actually have a chance after all:

The tricky thing is that they need to make sure that in the future they will be able to run through-trains to Union Station. So much wasted potential if they have to change trains at Palmdale.

This is good news and is no different than how Germany and other European nations did it.  You build out the easy areas which significantly reduces trip times and increases ridership which helps drive further investment for the tough areas.

BART plans to extend to the San Jose Dirdion station by 2025 as well, so this would become a major transfer point between HSR, Caltrain, and BART.
