And they're hosting it in a city that has the coldest, wettest, sh[inks]iest summers in the temperate world. Parts of England are currently under water, after they had their entire average July rainfall in 24 hours.

It'll be awesome. C'mon, it's the Olympics. Even Atlanta was awesome, and it absolutely sucked.

Yeah, I love the Olympics. TBS, I am glad that the games are in London instead of New York. It would basically be a mass transit and security nightmare.

Oh well, at least the fog in London is natural and not man made like the last host.

I love the Olympics, but they decided to have the games during the Civic Holiday week when I'm normally at the cottage, so I'll be missing half of it. (Same thing happened in 1996- I missed Donovan Bailey winning gold!)

I think he's talking about the failed attempt of New York City to host this year's event.

Clearly the solution is to privatize presidential elections.
So, in less than four years, get excited for the 2016 MetLife Financial U Pick The Prez Extravaganza. If you tweet a picture of your completed ballot with the hashtag #ivoted, you could win a trip for two to the inauguration or an iTunes gift card.

Which was a good thing. I feel sorry for London. Any mayor that supports his city making a bid to host the Olympics deserves to be voted out of office. They simply are not worth the cost and hassle.

Unless you're Melbourne where the only venues that would need to be built are the boat ponds.

Every summer games since L.A. '84 (except the notoriously mismanaged Athens '04) has turned a healthy profit.

This is correct, of course. Plus, it's great for future tourism. And, you get to host future world class events at your new facilities. Of course people who claim to be fiscal conservatives run and hide when they see large price tags...
And by the way, to those who suggest the Olympics are a bad thing for the city they are hosted in, do you support abolishing the Olympics all together? I mean, they have to go some where.

I gotta say, whoever said the Olympics aren't worth hosting is just dead wrong.
Some things actually supercede finances. I don't know what the figures were for the Vancouver games, but the patriotism those games inspired in Canada was beyond anything I've ever seen. It was the proudest I've ever been to be Canadian--not because I learned anything new, but because, finally, Canadians were coming together to show that we are a proud and strong people. We don't do enough of that in Canada, and it was about time we did.
I hope the English can get that same sense of pride out of their games.

I've read about how the International Olympic Committee is now looking into hosting in impoverished countries like Haiti, Philippines, India, etc. I don't know why but if they can't afford it then why award it to them?

For once, I think we can agree on something. I was there in Whistler, it was a great time to be a Canadian. I've always loved the Olympics, and have embraced it as a symbol of peace and athleticism.

Speculation is mounting about who will carry Australia's flag, which is an honour bestowed by the chef de mission on games' eve. As with every other country, it is the highest honour our Olympians can receive, but the choices have been a bit odd over the years. My personal pick would be cyclist Anna Meares, but the odds seem to be in favour of rower Drew Ginn, who'd also be a good choice. Who will be carrying the flag for your countries?

The two people most likely to have carried our flag (hurdlers Perdita Felicien and Pricilla Lopes-Schleip) were both eliminated from the Canadian Olympic Trials despite being two of the best hurdlers in the world. So, neither will carry our flag.
