Cheri Honkala (born 1963) is an American anti-poverty advocate, founder of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and founder and National Coordinator of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign. She has been a noted advocate for human rights in the United States and internationally.[1]

Honkala is the vice-presidential nominee of the Green Party in the 2012 presidential election. She was the Green Party candidate for Sheriff of Philadelphia in 2011.[2][3] She was featured prominently in the 1997 book Myth of the Welfare Queen by journalist David Zucchino.[4] She is the mother of actor Mark Webber.[2]

Early life

Honkala was born into poverty in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1963 and spent most of her youth battling homelessness and struggling to avoid youth detention facilities.[5] She became a vocal activist at a young age, getting arrested at a homeless demonstration at the age of 13.[6]

Activism

Honkala is known internationally for her work to advocate for the rights of poor people in the United States, having received recognition in various publications for her active role in bringing attention to issues such as homelessness and foreclosures.[7] Currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she devotes most of her attention to the rise in home evictions among lower income families.[5]

2011 campaign for Sheriff of Philadelphia

In early 2011, Honkala announced her run for Sheriff of Philadelphia on a "No Evictions" platform, with a campaign slogan of "Keeping families in their homes and protecting the 'hood."[5][8] She finished in third place with over 10,000 votes.[9]

2012 vice-presidential campaign

On July 11, 2012, Jill Stein, the presumptive nominee of the Green Party for President in the 2012 U.S. presidential election, announced that she had selected Honkala as her vice-presidential running mate.[10][11][12] Stein and Honkala are expected to be officially nominated at the Green Party national convention in Baltimore on Saturday, July 14.

She seems nice, but I wish Roseanne had been picked, for either president or VP.  Still, if you want  a "serious" Green party, this is probably a decent ticket.

She seems nice and well meaning, but I don't really agree with her politics. Voted FF.

I don't agree with her politics at all, but like Jill Stein, and Roseanne, she is a FF.

It's not too late. If Kent Mesplay releases his delegates, Roseanne can pull off a win.

FF

It's disgraceful that people with this type of agenda won't be in a position to truly use the government's power to advance the common good as long as we sell everything to the highest bidder

She seems to actually want a welfare state to exist and is probably anti-war as well. Clear HP.

In the context of my views on American politics, it generally is.

EDIT: Added in 'my views on'; was speaking of my own opinions, not electability.

FF - the Stein-Honkala presidential ticket is the most satisfying I've ever endorsed. Smile
