I seem to remember a story of some fruity woman marrying a building.

A political stunt, but one that's sorely needed to show that a corporation having the rights of a human being is silly.

This thread on the topic of corporate marraige was locked, in error, for not being serious. Obviously, it was addressing the real issue of corporate personhood, just as this woman is doing.

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=144535.15

Hopefully this issue works its way through the courts and someone decides that indeed corporations aren't people.

Moderately witty statement on the absurdity of one of the worst court decisions in history. Doesn't bother me and doesn't impress me. Just kind of makes me nod a bit. Good enough. Though I suppose at this point the most simple, over-exaggerated messages are the only ones capable of making even a momentary impact on our insatiable consumption of information and entertainment.

If I may give a one-liner:

What a horrible result that would be.

In this particular case, she's just trying to bring attention to the issue, but I honestly don't see what's so wrong with marrying a corporation as some kind of legal tactic.

You mean as a tax dodge, or like seizing half of its assets in a divorce settlement? Tongue

I was thinking of the second one, but I suppose the first might work too somehow...

That depends on what type of building the corporation is headquartered in. Here's hoping it's a skyscraper...

I'm sure they will be happy and have a little dividend by the end of the fiscal year.

Who says marriage has anything to do with sex?  It certainly has nothing to do with procreation any more.

Corporations have been treated by the Supreme Court as enjoying the constitutional privileges of the citizens that comprise them since, at the very latest, the era of John Marshall. See Hope Insurance Company of Providence v. Boardman, 9 U.S. 57 (1809); Bank of the United States v. Deveaux, 9 U.S. 61 (1809). And then, of course, there is the Marshall Court's Contract Clause jurisprudence. See Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, 17 U.S. 518 (1819).

The argument that a corporation enjoys no constitutional rights is illogical and frivolous.

I'm ready to say corporations aren't people, but liberals will be horrified at the results.  (Just for starters -- no more corporate donations to leftwing "charities"!)

Gotta consummate it Wink

Sadly for her, its likely to be located in a small single family home in the middle of Montana with 788 other corporations......

Next we will see a marriage between a woman and a flesh eating bacteria. It is the natural followup to other legal changes.

I don't get the claim that Citizens United created corporate personhood, it didn't, and I don't get all the antics like the one in the OP.

The 2010 decision only extended First Amendment protection to corporate speech and said that the law could not distinguish between a media corporation which already had the right and any other corporation. Corporate personhood as a legal concept in the US goes back at least to 1818 when SCOTUS ruled that corporations had the same right to enter into contracts as did persons. The court has ruled that not all individual rights can extend to corporations, just those that individuals could expect to maintain through the right of association. For example SCOTUS does not extend Fifth Amendment protection from self-incrimination to corporations.
