Which candidate was the better orator in each election?

1948-onwards:
1948 - Truman, quite obviously. Did Dewey even ever make a memorable speech during his career?
1952 - Stevenson
1956 - Ditto
1960 - Haha, JFK. Not that Nixon was terrible
1964 - Not sure. Lean Goldwater for the "Liberty" speech
1968 - All three were decent - lean Wallace
1972 - Nixon
1976 - Neither were inspiring - probably Carter by default
1980 - Reagan
1984 - Reagan
1988 - "No New Taxes" was about the only memorable speech during this campaign, so Bush
1992 - Clinton
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Gore
2004 - Kerry
2008 - Obama
2012 - Obama

Anyway, does it really matter at this point? I still lost 2 pounds as a result of the 4 sloppy joes.

Kerry and Gore were horrible. I know it's easy to turn the other cheek to Bush because he "sounds stupid," but that folksy friendliness was half the reason Bush won (the other half, of course, being the Supreme Court
).

)
1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower

1964: Johnson
(Goldwater was a great orator too, but Johnson won the hearts and minds of both history and the American people.)

1896: William Jennings Bryan (no question)
1900: Either Bryan or Eugene V. Debs. It would help me to decide if I could find a tape or recording of Debs speaking.
1904: Leaning towards Roosevelt, but again, I can't make the call without a tape of Debs's voice.
1908: See 1900
1912: See 1904.
1916: Can't say. Leaning towards Wilson, but I can't find any audio of Hughes speaking at all.
1920: Again, can't say. Can't find any recordings of Cox's voice.
1924: Robert La Follette.
1928: Norman Thomas
1932: FDR
1936: FDR
1940: FDR
1944: FDR
1948: Truman
1952: Stevenson
1956: Stevenson
1960: JFK (I'm starting to see a pattern here)
1964: Barry Goldwater (Nevermind)
1968: Humphrey.
1972: McGovern
1976: Ford (both were incredibly boring)
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Dukakis
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: Al Gore
2004: Bush (the fact that he was better than Kerry says almost nothing).

Bush was actually a
really
good speaker when compared to Kerry and especially to Gore. It's pretty hackish not to admit it.
