Often considered the quintessential "Reagan Democratic" county (even though it's a dumb term), it's often been used as a bellwether of how the typical working-class Rustbelt voter swings. Obama won it by 8.5% in 2008; will he carry it again?

The Black exodus from Detroit has entered Warren and Eastpointe. This is not 1984 Macomb County.

Although the black portion of Macomb County's population did triple between 2000 and 2010, the county is still 84% white.

I thought Macomb was white-collar middle class.

Obama will win Michigan unless its a blowout. PA, WI, and yes MN will be closer and are states that Romney can possibly pick off. Forget Michigan. It means nothing. Its the difference between 315 and 330 on either side.

Eh, it's the classic bellwether county of blue-collar America. And yes, "Reagan Democrat" is a stupid term.

There's no such thing as a "Reagan Democrat" anymore.  Nearly all of them returned to the Democratic Party when  Bill Clinton was elected in 1992 and have stayed with the Dems ever since.  And Macomb county isn't always a bellwether in presidential elections: if I remember correctly, it voted narrowly for Al Gore in 2000.  (BTW: it also voted for Dick Posthumus for Governor in 2002, so it's not always a bellwether in state elections either.)  But it is still a qunitessential swing county, quite a reversal of roles since its time as a union Democrat stronghold in the 50s and 60s and a socially conservative, Republican-leaning county in the 80s.

Mondale and Carter won much of "blue-collar America."

If the electing were held today, Obama probably would carry Macomb County, but whether he will in November is another story.

Carter, yes, but Mondale?  Have you seen the 1984 county map?  Clinton did far, far better with blue-collar America.
