Not quite sure why this was polled, but apparently Netanyahu is moderately popular here in Ameirica. http://www.gallup.com/poll/156338/Americans-Positive-Negative-Toward-Netanyahu.aspx?version=print

Among Republicans his rating is 50/16. Among Democrat's it's 25/31. With Independents it's 32/23.

Mods - not quite sure where this post belongs. Feel free to move.

I never understood why we blindly back Israel, even when they might be wrong. They are really defensive. Just a few months ago, Israel and Iran's crap sent gas prices soaring.

Because there are close historical and cultural ties between Israel and the US and the countries have been close allies for as long as they have existed simultaneously, and that he's actually been a rather good Prime Minister for Israel? That more Democrats disapprove than approve freaks me out a little, though. It isn't a good sign.

Actually no, if you remember, Truman debating even recognizing Israel and Eisenhower wasn't all that fond of the Israelis either.

Yeah, I find it utterly bizarre how Americans seem to view Israel.

Actually no, if you remember, Truman debating even recognizing Israel and Eisenhower wasn't all that fond of the Israelis either.

Truman was unsure, but ultimately he did it 13 minutes after they declared independence. Eisenhower admittedly did not back Israel in the Suez Crisis, but otherwise he was reasonably pro-Israeli, and you could use the Suez Crisis to say Eisenhower was anti-British or anti-French. Still, the US backed Israel in the Six-Day War and later a nuclear war almost began because of American support for Israel in the Yom Kippur War.

I never understood why we blindly back Israel, even when they might be wrong. They are really defensive. Just a few months ago, Israel and Iran's crap sent gas prices soaring.

Why? It's perfectly logical. We are culturally similar, have some of the same enemies, and have been allies for decades.

Well, shadowy cabals of international bankers tend to have a lot of influence in the US, clearly...

In all seriousness, this is sad but hardly unexpected.

Hm, you're actually right, since Israel and the U.S. are both horrible warmongering countries that are built upon human suffering.

You have done far more to make the Palestinians appear to be a wholly unsympathetic, violent, and backwards people for whom statehood is a ludicrous fantasy, deserving of annexation at best or otherwise expulsion to their equally artificial Arab neighbors; you give them the image of a cartoonishly evil people who know nothing but hate and a lust for destruction and holocaust denialism, and nothing of peace, cooperation, and reason, than any Israel promoter here or anywhere for that matter.

Evangelicals are far more blindly pro-Israel than Jews are. And they are a far larger pool of voters. Check out the party breakdown.

The Israelis may have little to recommend themselves to the mind of a secular and rational European-American mind, but the Arabs have nothing at all.

Besides, it's easier to support the side that has "peace demonstrations" and has shown its willingness to "trade land for peace".

^^^^ Bingo. This is the real reason why the U.S. supports Israel so blindly. The so-called Jewish lobby is actually a relatively minor factor. Electorally, Evangelical Christian Zionists are far, far more important.
