This.  We already had a never-married President (1857-61).

Well, he's referring to the immediate future (although, yes, scenario 2 actually occurred in the 19th century). I would say scenario 2 is still likelier.

scenario 2 will probably not happen until scenario 1 is possible.

Who are some prominent currently living American politicians over 40 who are in the second category?

Off the top of my head, I can think of:

Lindsey Graham
Herb Kohl
Janet Napolitano
Condoleezza Rice

Any others?  I'm sure there must be quite a few.

None of those have come out though, right?

Today? The latter scenario is more likely. But it likely will not be by the end of this decade.

Correct, that's why they're in Category #2.

I still think option 2 is more likely, even today.

Option 1.  Those in Option 2 will lose too many votes from those who suspect they are secretly gay.  Some votes will be lost for being gay, other votes will be lost for not having the courage to come out.

Russ Feingold, I believe.

Feingold is twice divorced.  We're only talking about people who've never been married.
