http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/30/us/politics/bill-clinton-to-have-marquee-role-at-democratic-convention.html

Quote
Former President Bill Clinton is set to play a central part in the Democratic convention, aides said, and will formally place President Obama’s name into nomination by delivering a prime-time speech designed to present a forceful economic argument for why Mr. Obama deserves to win a second term.
.
.
.
Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will appear on the final night of the convention, making the case for Mr. Obama before the largest audience of the week during an outdoor speech at the Bank of America Stadium. The vice president and Mr. Obama will appear together on stage before they accept the party’s nomination for a second term in the White House.

Normally, the VP nominee gives his nomination acceptance speech on Wednesday night, and the presidential nomination does the same on Thursday night (the last night of the convention).  It sounds like this time around, both Biden and Obama are going on Thursday night, and Bill Clinton is going on (presumably) Wednesday night.  The keynote speech is normally on Tuesday, and it hasn't been announced yet who's going to deliver it.

I thought the problem was that he DID keep to the schedule? I was under the impression that the Dukakis people had prepared the introduction and so the ridiculous length was their blunder. Clinton was just trying to stick to the text.

They moved that back so it couldn't compete with the Convention.

The moved the the game back a day from the usual Thursday to Wednesday to avoid a conflict with Obama's speech. Clinton, on the other hand, will have to compete with the Giants and Cowboys.

While I can believe the Dukakis people told Clinton what topics they wanted covered and that he dutifully covered them all, without a cite I can't believe they wanted him to speak for over an hour and finish up past primetime, which is what Billy Boy did.

Keep dreaming if you think it's not going to affect ratings...

It's an advantage to go 2nd as the DNC is...but between the vacationed shortened labor day week, the shortened 3 day event, the football game, and Obama-Biden going on a single marathon speech night, I would rather be in the RNC's position.

This definitely wasn't a bad decision for the Democrats to make.

The news just keeps getting better.

There is clear benefit to having Clinton speak. It's just the logistics of the week that are not ideal.

I don't think the fact that he's a former president chips away at that message, if that's what you're getting that.
