This bill does away with the distinction between alcohol sales on the retailer's premises and off the retailer's premises. Frankly, I don't think that a ban on alcohol sales off the retailer's premises between midnight and six o'clock in the morning makes a lot of sense. While the reason why this regulation is in place may be the prevention of alcoholism, I doubt that the statute is very effective in this respect. Thus, we can as well allow the sale of alcohol 24 hours a day - it makes things a lot easier for retailers that sell alcohol.

I don't see any reason to oppose this bill.

Wouldn't it just be easier to say sales aren't permitted on Sunday?  Also, was that an amendment you offered?

Why ban the sale of alcohol on Sundays?

Honestly, just looking at a revenue standpoint I support this. Morally, people can still drink alcohol even if they don't buy it on Sunday so this doesn't deter drinking. I believe people are more likely to buy and drink beer on a Friday or Saturday anyway. If someone's worried about the trip to get the liquor because you are walking over ____ steps on the Sabbath, well let's be reminded this is the modern world and people go to the grocery store, get hair cuts, drive to church, work out, go to the park with their kids.

It's not out of any desire of theocracy that I purposed this. My question is why should there be Sunday sales?

Anything else can be sold on Sunday. Why make an exception for alcohol and why make an exception for Sunday and not Tuesday or Friday?

My question Napoleon is why should the left in Atlasia get everything it wants and conservatives are always expected to cave in?

Assuming I count as the Left, I wanted my question answered, and that is something I didn't get. Why is this something conservatives would or should want? The policy as proposed was put forth by one of the most undeniably conservative persons in this game.

And trust me the Left hasn't gotten everything it wants, even looking at the bills I have signed.

As a conservative, I see no reason why sales shouldn't be allowed on Sunday.  And again, I ask, are you proposing an amendment to the bill?

JCL, you know you're one of my greatest friends and political allies in this game. As a friend, I'm telling you that this is one of the stupidest arguments I've ever heard. God doesn't care if Bob goes and buys beer on Sunday. If we're gonna ban buying beer on Sunday, we might as well ban the sale of cigarettes, weed, pork and everything else Jesus would disapprove of. Let's not mix religion and politics.

20RP12: This is an issue in Indiana politics right now I was trying to bring some realism into the discussion. There are many individuals, mostly of the older generation whom I agree with, think that not all of the "blue laws" should be done away with. Its come up also because of the chik-fil-a situation and Rahm Emmanuel's trying to ban them over not having "Chicago values". I wish for the day where religion and politics were less intertwined. Honestly, when I said that to Napoleon I wasn't totally thinking rationally. RL situation had me in an uproar.

Napoleon: Many want to keep Sunday sales banned both out of religious and cultural tradition here in Indiana. Many also want it allowed. It's been an issue in our Assembly in Indiana for several years. Here in Indiana the sale of alcohol is banned not only on Sunday's but on holidays.

JCL, I understand where you are coming from. A ban on Sunday sales (sales in general, not only the sale of alcohol) is not as "theocratic" as it may seem. In fact, Sunday sales are forbidden or subject to heavy restrictions in different parts of the world (my home country included), mainly due to a mix of traditional reasons and an attempt to protect the rights of the workers. With that in mind, I was faced with three options when introducing a bill which deals with the time of alcohol sales:

a) leave things as they are

b) ban Sunday shopping across the board

c) seek to treat alcohol in the same way as other things you can buy

I decided to pick the third option because option a) seemed inconsistent to me (is there really a good reason to make an exception for the sale of alcohol?) and option b) was not realistic because Sunday shopping is very widespread in the culture where most of you guys come from. Indeed, I came to the conclusion that c), this very proposal, makes most sense.

Is there an amendment?  JCL, I need an answer on if you posted that as an actual amendment to the bill or just part of the discussion.

I had purposed it as an amendment to the bill on the previous page and the responses since have been concerning the amendment.

I think we're ready to vote on JCL's amendment.  Members will vote AYE, NAY, or ABSTAIN.  This will be a 24-hour vote.
