Quote
Gore Vidal, the iconoclastic writer, savvy analyst and imperious gadfly on the national conscience, has died. He was 86.

Vidal died Tuesday at his home in the Hollywood Hills of complications of pneumonia, said nephew Burr Steers.

Vidal was a literary juggernaut who wrote 25 novels, including historical works such as “Lincoln” and “Burr” and satires such as “Myra Breckinridge” and “Duluth.” He was also a prolific essayist whose pieces on politics, sexuality, religion and literature -- once described as “elegantly sustained demolition derbies” -- both delighted and inflamed and in 1993 earned him a National Book Award for his massive “United States Essays, 1952-1992.”

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm praying for another black-yellow majority, and for the SPD to get shattered.  It's exactly what it deserves.

I recall posting that he had died when the hairdresser did, was that on Facebook or on here as well?

I haven't read the article, but I firmly support Simfan's efforts to blame Lena Dunham for our society's rot.

My most vivid memory of him is when he appeared on the BBC's 2008 US election night coverage and had an 'interesting' discussion with David Dimbleby.

Wow...did not expect this...Vidal always had a way of pissing me off. I would never call him a HP, but I can't say I liked him a whole lot. I always liked Truman Capote, his rival, a whole lot more. I do appreciate Vidals fight for the truth regarding Oklahoma City.

Creation is a great book, ditto Julian.  I always enjoyed Live From Golgotha.

Never cared too much for his US books.

Interesting character. I quite enjoyed his contretemps with Bill Buckley way back in 1968 at the GOP convention, when the word Nazi was slung around between them as commentators for I think ABC News, and they thereafter had to be physically separated. I agree with Mikado about Julian. I very much enjoyed that book. I know that opebo would like it with its anti-Christian theme!  Tongue

From a Grauniad article about his death:

Quote
The same refusal to back down characterised his dispute with Norman Mailer, whose attitudes towards women had brought rebukes from Gloria Steinem and Kate Millett. Vidal entered the fray with an article suggesting there was "a logical progression" from Henry Miller to Mailer to Charles Manson. Mailer responded at a Manhattan dinner party in 1977 by throwing a glass of whiskey in Vidal's face, head-butting him and then throwing a punch. Vidal is said to have replied: "Lost for words again, Norman?"
