I heard atheists are even more disliked than homosexuals.

There are more openly gay politicians.

Tammy Baldwin and Christine Quinn are running for offices which can be used to launch a presidential bid. Baldwin is frontrunner for Senate in Wisconsin, while Quinn is a top contender for New York City Mayor. Both could run as soon as 2016, although 2020 is more plausible.

There are also a few gay Republican candidates with a shot at higher office in the future.
Richard Tisei, the former Massachusetts Senate Minority Leader and 2010 Candidate for Lieutenant Governor, is running for US House in a district that went 58% for Scott Brown.

Councilman Carl Demaio is the Republican candidate for San Diego mayor, which could be a launching pad for statewide office.

The most prominent atheist in public life is Pete Stark, an 82 year old California Congressman widely considered to be corrupt and difficult to get along with.

The poll seems to have something pertinent to say on the matter, though I do think both of these options will come to pass at some point in the future.

If you mean openly, a gay could be elected way easier then an atheist. If closeted, I'm pretty sure we've had both already.
