Despite the jokes people make about my shows here, yes I have at least once. It had kind of an odd lineup, it was like:

Pop punk
Post-rock
Noise rock (3/4 female)
Riot Grrl (headlining)

The last band probably being the reason why. But it was probably about 60% female in attendence.

Oh yeah I also saw Something Corporate and Yellowcard when I was 20, that too might qualify.

Well, certainly not in America, of course.  Very very few female in bars and nightclubs, alas.  Similar here in Thailand in normal bars and nightclubs, but not at a few university 'concerts' or 'shows' I've been to - most Thai universities are about 60-70% female.

Probably, iunno, I don't really pay attention. Most of the shows I've been too always seemed pretty even, no more than 60-40 one way or the other.

What the f**k is that?

For the record that's usually the case with the shows I go to, the idea that they are almost all male from the videos posted is usually because those videos focus on the people agressively dancing up front, who are disproportionally male.

Sure.

Performances of madrigals. Which are (frequently) a capella (generally) polyphonic songs (generally) dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

I've also seen female Japanese rock singers in concert a couple of times, and those tend to have non-Japanese fanbases that split between about 50-50 and 60-40 girls.

Yeah, I could see that would attract more females. And is certainly not my thing.

Do you think that would apply to these Japanese girls? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_JyVXVpLZk

Those are very atypical female Japanese rockers.

No.  I might question my tastes if I did.  Women tend to like sh**tty music.

....of course most dudes do too...but most...maybe all...of my favorite bands are very heavy on the dude side and I've often found the "similar" bands that do have large lady followings are, at least to me, pretty sucky.  A lot of ladies like the Doors, I think the Doors suck.  It was ladies that killed popular rock and roll during the Hair Band era.  It's the lady types that make Top 40 such a horrible thing to listen to.  I guess a lot chicks like(d) Nirvana and they were cool.  One exception.  And Nirvana still had more male fans than female.  On the flip side, I'd feel really weird going to a show that was 99% dude (eg, metal).  Most of the bands I like do have a female following, it's just usually pretty small.

dead0man is quite un-scene with that attitude.

Lots of good indie rock and pop punk bands have a lot of female fans, so do "trendy" hardcore bands like La Dispute. Girls also seem to really like that genre that is basically "pop hardcore" a lot, bands like Fireworks, Polar Bear Club, Transit, The Wonder Years, Living With Lions, etc.

BRTD, I think this is the first time I've found more in common between my musical taste and yours versus mine and someone else's on Atlas, although I do like some of the classic rock that dead0man mentioned. As you know my tastes are generally very traditional and (to you and to most people) probably quite boring, but indie rock and pop punk are things that...I guess to an extent they appeal to me, not necessarily as much as chamber pop, for instance.

So do you like that pop hardcore stuff? Like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYwgB4n1Wfk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R8CrQ8bYi8

The thing though is I don't see you as the type of person to really enjoy this at shows, which is mostly what the whole point of it is. I have a tough time imagining you doing a lot of jumping and crowding around the frontman screaming when he puts the mic in the crowd, and are probably more likely to run from than catch crowdsurfs. The main reason people like to go to shows of this type so much regardless of how into the bands they are is because of the dancing.

I now wonder what girls who are into ballet or modern dance or whatever would think of such a show and if they'd consider dancing in that manner to be below them.

The ballerinas who I know (I don't know many, not nearly as many as I do actresses or female fencers, for instance, but I do know a few) are actually a lot less snooty than one might expect, although they'd probably still find mosh dancing fairly uninteresting.

I like the music that you linked me much more than I expected and more than I like most of the music that you like, but I'm still not really thrilled with it and you're right that it would be a lot better at a show, which I probably wouldn't enjoy much.

There was a really fantastic documentary on BBC4 last year on that general subject.

Death Cab For Cutie was something like a 55-45 split for obvious reasons. Their old material was much more interesting than anything new they've written and it's cryptic lyrics are better than Zoey gushing or explicit depression.

I expect Jens Lekman's show in Portland that I will be attending to be filled with girls. Nathan, you should check him out. You'd like it.
