I've known a few gays who consider it desperate mimicry of straight people and will lead to an erosion of gay culture.

Yes, the gay "culture" in which gay men find comfort in isolation from the rest of the world and its bigotry. Unfortunately for them, it's 2012, and that isolation is not really needed anymore.
