They then steal an armoured vehicle and use it to make a failed attack on Israel, but get blown up.

RIP to the policemen who died doing their duty, but at least thankfully the story has a happy ending.

A blow by blow account.

It was vague and unclear, without details about the time, the place, the target or the type of attack. But with that information in hand, OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo needed to prepare his forces for an attack that he did not exactly know where or how it would happen along a border that runs some 230 kilometers.

<snip>

About 20 minutes before the attack, the IDF noticed that something was happening on the Egyptian side of the border. It was exactly then that around 35 armed men stormed an Egyptian military base some 2 km. from the border, broke into the dining hall as the soldiers were sitting down for the daily iftar meal – when Muslims break their fast during Ramadan – and shot and killed 16 soldiers. They then stole an armored vehicle.

Joined by a pickup truck, estimated to have been carrying about half-a-ton of explosives, the armored vehicle starting heading towards the border, a regular sight for IDF surveillance teams. But then, the two vehicles stormed through the Egyptian border gate and then through the Israeli gate as well, the same one where Gilad Schalit crossed through late last year.

<snip>

In the meantime back at the border gate, the pickup truck suddenly exploded shaking windows in nearby IDF bases. Later, soldiers would find remains of at least one person although completely unidentifiable.

<snip>

At the same time and after the vehicle had crossed some 2 km, an Israeli aircraft was diverted to the scene and fired off a missile, finally causing the necessary damage to stop the vehicle’s advance. The bombing, approved by Russo, was not a simple decision and was unprecedented due to the fact that it took place inside Israeli territory.

After the vehicle stopped, two of the terrorists exited the vehicle and headed for cover in nearby fields, opening fire at a farming vehicle. In the meantime, the tank from behind fired two shells from a short distance, destroying the vehicle and killing at least five other terrorists still inside. Later, after a short gunfight, IDF soldiers killed the two terrorists outside.

Almost all of the terrorists were found to be wearing explosive bomb belts which has led the IDF to believe that the terrorists’ target was to either infiltrate an IDF base or a nearby town and to kill as many people as possible. The identities of the attackers are still unknown although a majority of them are believed to be Bedouin from the Sinai Peninsula.

The attack was also very similar to the cross-border attack that took place last August near the Netafim Crossing during which eight Israelis were killed. Then, the attackers were also Bedouin, were also wearing explosive belts and also carried out a sophisticated attack.

<snip>
Also, Egypt is deploying fighter jets to the Sinai, the first time since 1979.  And a large number of ground reinforcements will join them in the next several days.  All coordinated with Israel.

The Muslim Brotherhood and the Hamas is saying than the attack was done by Mossad, in order to destabilize the new Eguptian government and than this proves than Egypt must remilitarize Sinaï, in order to bring back security there.

Now Egypt is saying that asshats in Gaza assisted the terrorists by firing mortars from Gaza at Egyptian positions.  link

"At the time of the attack, elements in the Gaza Strip helped by firing mortars at the area of the Karm Abu Salem" border crossing, the army said in a statement.

The army said 35 gunmen were involved in the "terrorist act" which it added was launched during "the iftar and the call to prayer" signalling the end of the daytime Muslim fast during Ramadan.

The gunmen, who are suspected of being jihadists, attacked a border crossing between Egypt and Israel on Sunday, killing 16 guards, before entering the Jewish state where Israel says its forces killed five of them.
Also, their goal seems to be war between Israel and Egypt.  link

Sunday night's terror attack at Kerem Shalom highlighted the more severe ramifications of the upheaval in the Arab world: Salafi terrorists belonging to global jihad, arms smuggling from Sinai, the motivation to embarrass Egypt and to turn Israel and Egypt against each other. The incident also indicated that the jihadist terrorists, for whom Sinai serves as a safe haven, plan to ignite the region by creating a situation whereby the Egyptian army appears to be involved in an attack on Israel. The terrorists apparently planned to take advantage of the initial shock their infiltration into Israel could have caused to kidnap a soldier or citizen.

Sunday's attack on an Egyptian army base showcased the terrorists' military experience, planning capabilities and audacity. The level of the attack itself would not have shamed an elite army unit. The terrorists were apparently carrying weapons transferred from Libya. These weapons helped them overtake the Egyptian soldiers securing the Kerem Shalom border crossing, who were inadequately armed.

<snip>

The terror attack, had it not been thwarted, could have led to a direct clash between the Israeli and Egyptian armies. The third "victim" was supposed to be the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt, which global jihad deems too moderate.

<snip>

The IDF and the Egyptian military are continuing to cooperate in an effort to curb the jihadist threat. In their recent talks with senior Egyptian officials in Cairo, US Secretary of State Clinton and Defense Secretary Panetta stressed the urgent need to address the threat posed by al-Qaeda and jihadist groups operating in chaotic regions. These groups threaten not only Israel and the West, but also the recently-established Muslim regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen and other countries.

According to reports, the Egyptian army heads told the Americans they were aware of the problem, and Sunday's attack apparently served as an unpleasant reminder of the jihadist threat. In the future Israel and Egypt may have to secretly agree that the IDF will be in charge of directly thwarting such attacks.
